A world-class university

Swansea University is a research-led university that has been making a difference since 1920. The University community thrives on exploration and discovery and offers the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life.

The University has enjoyed a period of tremendous growth, and we have achieved our ambition to be a top thirty research University, soaring up the 2014 Research Excellence Framework league table to 26th in the UK from 52nd in 2008.

Additionally, an ambitious Campus Development Programme is well underway – one of the largest knowledge economy projects in the UK and within the top five in Europe.

It involves the creation of the Bay Campus, a brand new £450 million development on the eastern approach to the city, together with the transformation of our existing Singleton Park Campus.

Swansea's multicultural dual-campus community provides a global perspective and opportunities to gain skills that last a lifetime.

True to the vision of its industrial founders in 1920 Swansea University will:

  • Provide an environment of research excellence, with research that is world-leading, globally collaborative and internationally recognised;
  • Deliver an outstanding student experience, with research-led and practice-driven teaching of the highest quality that produces global graduates educated and equipped for distinguished personal and professional achievement;
  • Use its research strength, collaboration with industry and global reach, to drive economic growth, foster prosperity, enrich the community and cultural life of Wales and, contribute to the health, leisure and wellbeing of its citizens.

A beacon for pioneering collaborations

In the Research Excellence Framework of 2014, Swansea University achieved its ambition to become a UK top 30 research institution.

Our REF ranking of 26th was the “biggest leap among research-intensive institutions”, according to Times Higher Education. Now, as the university nears its centenary year in 2020, we have new goals. They are to:

  • Become a UK top 30-ranked university by 2018
  • Continue our ambitious expansion plans
  • Extend our global reach; and
  • Move closer to becoming one of the world’s top 200 universities.

In REF 2014 the quality of Swansea’s research was put on a par with or out-performed six Russell Group universities. We were also ranked 22nd for the impact of that research.

Course Overview

The role of the structural engineer is of growing importance to society as populations grow and the world becomes more interconnected. Skyscrapers are getting taller and bridges are getting longer. The Green Energy revolution requires energy generating infrastructure to be structurally designed for resilience in harsh environments, e.g. high wind or deep marine locations. As a major contributor to CO2 production (10% of global emissions), the construction industry depends on structural engineers to design energy-efficient buildings, using appropriate materials to minimise the environmental impact of the sector.

Students on the MSc Structural Engineering course will be provided with in-depth knowledge and exposure to established and innovative ideas and techniques to enable them to develop sound solutions to structural engineering problems.... [-]

Course Overview

The MSc in Sustainable Engineering Management For International Development is a highly applied course with taught elements and a substantial project deliverable.

You will learn to think rapidly and flexibly, acting decisively in the absence of complete information in order to improve the quality of life through engineering solutions.

Most of the world’s construction is located in “developing countries, primarily in the Southern Hemisphere” (UNDP). These environments face challenges from extreme poverty and food shortages to manmade climate change and irreversible loss of biodiversity.

This course aims to make you part of a new generation of practitioners who can address such challenges through practical engineering solutions, building resilience for local communities in the face of rapid urbanisation.... [-]
