University of Kent, School of Mathematics, Statistics & Actuarial Science

Introduction

SMSAS is a long-established provider of teaching in mathematics and statistics, finance and actuarial science, with a firmly established reputation for excellence in research. We currently have over 40 PhD students and several postdoctoral researchers and research fellows collaborating with our research-active teaching staff.

Much of science is based upon the application of mathematics. It provides the theoretical framework for physical sciences, for statistics and data analysis, as well as for computer science. New discoveries within mathematics affect our fundamental understanding of the world we live in, and the School's teaching and research reflect the diversity of mathematics today.

SMSAS offers a range of single and joint honours degrees, postgraduate diploma programmes, Master's programmes and research programmes - see the listings on the right. Distinctive offerings include an option for students who wouldn't otherwise be eligible for degree level studies to take a Foundation Year, as well as four year MMath and MMathStat programmes.

The School is strongly committed to student achievement and developing student creativity and employability, with "Year in Industry" placements offering solid work experience.

Equality, diversity, and inclusivity are at the heart of the SMSAS philosophy and the School is working towards Athena SWAN Silver status.

The Mathematics group at SMSAS aims to achieve international recognition as a centre of excellence in that field of research. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, 2008) 95% of mathematics research submitted was rated at International Quality or above.

The School's Statistics group was ranked 8th in the UK by the RAE and two thirds of research output was assessed as internationally excellent or world leading. Virtually all the remainder was judged to be worthy of international recognition.

The Centre for Actuarial Science, Risk and Investment (CASRI) is based within the School and is one of just three university providers of programmes in Actuarial Science that are accredited by the UK Actuarial Profession. The Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Royal Statistical Society, and the Chartered Financial Analyst® Institute are among the other institutions that recognise the rigour and relevance of SMSAS programmes.

MSc, MPhil, PhD - Mathematics At SMSAS you could be joining a vibrant research community of almost 100 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers and academic staff. You would have the opportunity to engage with a very wide range of research topics within a well-established system of support and training, with a high level of contact between staff and research students. A very active research seminar programme further enhances the Mathematics research experience. Course structure The research interests of the Mathematics Group cover a wide range of topics following our strategy of cohesion with diversity. The areas outlined provide focal points for these varied interests. Research areas Nonlinear Differential Equations The research on nonlinear differential equations primarily studies algorithms for their classification, normal forms, symmetry reductions and exact solutions. Boundary value problems are studied from an analytical viewpoint, using functional analysis and spectral theory to investigate properties of solutions. We also study applications of symmetry methods to numerical schemes, in particular the applications of moving frames. Painlevé Equations Current research on the Painlevé equations involves the structure of hierarchies of rational, algebraic and special function families of exact solutions, Bäcklund transformations and connection formulae using the isomonodromic deformation method. The group is also studying analogous results for the discrete Painlevé equations, which are nonlinear difference equations. Mathematical Biology Artificial immune systems use nonlinear interactions between cell populations in the immune system as the inspiration for new computer algorithms. We are using techniques of nonlinear dynamical systems to analyse the properties of these... [-]
