In-Company Training An investment with real potential. Recruiting, developing and retaining good people is one of the greatest challenges for organisations large and small. Many corporations are asking themselves: ‘How can we motivate good staff?’ ‘What can we do to reward them and retain them?’ ‘How can we develop skills that are useful to us?’ Academic programmes can provide your staff with knowledge and understanding, but these programmes often do not provide the associated skills that can make a difference to a specific business or profession. Training can be a time consuming and inefficient process. It needs resources and logistics that can often challenge the cost-effectiveness of developing your staff, and the training programme itself may not engage employees in a way that makes training effective. What if such a programme was wrapped inside an in-company project designed to target specific company issues and which could be mentored by your senior executives? Online Business School has developed such a programme which is mapped against OFQUAL RQF credits and provides access to top up university programmes. Companies can purchase access to the materials for their staff and the materials can be used as stand-alone CPD resources and can, of course, be supported by live training or mentoring. The assessments can be purchased alongside access to the materials as an option for those staff that wish to convert the modules into a university qualification, with either a BA or an MBA. The modules are topped off by a series of Assignments which summarily tests skills and understanding. On successful completion of the assessments and assignments, staff can top-up to their chosen university qualification by distance learning, meaning that no campus attendance is required. In addition, OBS has a “white label” offering. A company can design programmes around their specific requirements. We can brand learning material into a corporate look and feel, obtain OFQUAL approval to enable credits against further study, and provide specialist advice in the design, structure, and envelopment of an in-house online training resource. Through our links with leading edge businesses and organisations in the public and voluntary sectors, our students are able to access project and placement opportunities that enhance their employability on graduation. History Coventry University has a long tradition as a provider of education. Our roots go as far back as Coventry College of Design in 1843. It was in 1970 that Coventry College of Art amalgamated with Lanchester College of Technology and Rugby College of Engineering Technology. The resulting institution was called Lanchester Polytechnic: 'Lanchester' after the Midlands automotive industry pioneer, Dr Frederick Lanchester, and 'Polytechnic' meaning 'skilled in many sciences and arts'. In 1987 the name changed to Coventry Polytechnic and in 1992 the University was set up under UK Government legislation, as laid out in the University’s Instrument and Articles of Government. The Lanchester name has been preserved in the title of our art gallery, the Lanchester Gallery, as well as in the Lanchester Library. Identity The phoenix was a mythical bird with splendid plumage, reputed to live in the Arabian Desert. Fabled to be the only one of its kind, the phoenix lived for five or six centuries, after which it burned itself to death on a funeral pyre of aromatic twigs ignited by the sun and fanned by its own wings. The phoenix rose from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle. Such a symbol is a fitting reminder of the way in which the city of Coventry rebuilt itself after suffering devastation during the Second World War. It is a symbol with which Coventry University is proud to be associated and to have adopted as its own. The School of Law was established in 1969 and has since developed into one of the leading Law Schools in the UK. Its teaching standards and research quality consistently receive high ratings, and the University itself ranks amongst the leading half-dozen research and teaching institutions in the UK. The School of Law is located in the Social Studies Faculty of the university. The School has a student population of about 1000 (900 undergraduates and 100 postgraduates) with… [+] 50 full-time academic and, at any one time, close to a dozen research fellows. The School has a strong research culture and all staff are active researchers in their own areas of expertise. Two distinctive features of the School of Law are its contextual approach to the study of law and its commitment to offering an international perspective on law. The contextual approach has been developed at Warwick for over forty years. Our aim is to avoid treating law as if it can be separated from other aspects of society. So as well as studying legal judgments and statutes, students also examine the impact of economic, cultural and political change on law and consider how law affects life beyond the court-room and the lawyer's office. The School encourages comparative and international perspectives on law and this approach influences courses offered at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The international nature of the School is refelected in the cosmopolitan nature of the student body, it being common for there to be students from twenty or more countries studying here at any one time. The teaching staff too are varied in their backgrounds and most have extensive international experience. Warwick provides excellent facilities and support for students. The University library system contains in excess of 750,000 volumes and the University has a fully developed Campus Data Network providing access to a central core of computer services, to personal computers and to workstations across the University. Warwick also served as the location for the Law Courseware Consortium, responsible for developing Iolis, a comprehensive collection of electronic course materials in the main law subjects.

These themes will be supplemented in the future as we become a hub for cross-disciplinary research and teaching, working with other departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences and elsewhere at the University.
