The Institute of Education (IE) is a new teaching and research unit of the University of Minho (UMinho) created in 2009 by joining the Child Studies Centre (IEC) and the Institute of Education and Psychology (IEP), regarding its Educational component. University of Minho - School of Economics and Management - PhD Programmes EEG offers 8 undergraduate degree courses, of which 4 are taught in post-labour regime; 16 Master Programmes and 6 Doctoral Programmes, of which 3 are jointly offered along with other higher education institutions. BRIEF HISTORY EU THE University of Évora It was the second university to be established in Portugal. After the founding of the University of Coimbra in 1537, it has been felt the need for another university to serve the South. Évora, ecclesiastical metropolis and temporary residence of the Court, emerged immediately as the most suitable city. Although the original idea of the creation of the second University Kingdom, have belonged to John III, was given by Cardinal Henry its embodiment. Interested in educational issues, she began by founding the College of the Holy Spirit, entrusting him to the then newly founded Society of Jesus. Even the works of the building stemmed and has asked Cardinal of Rome transformation of the College in full University. With the approval of Pope Paul IV, expressed in the bull Cum nobis April 1559, the new university was created, with the right to teach all subjects except medicine, civil law and litigation of the Canon Law. In the reign of Dom Pedro II, was to be introduced the teaching of Mathematics, covering subjects as diverse as geography, physics, or Military Architecture. The prestige of the University of Évora during the two centuries of its existence first phase confused with the prestige and the scientific value of its teachers. To it they were linked relevant names in Portuguese and Spanish culture, which is important to emphasize, first and foremost, Luis de Molina, theologian and moralist of creativity and European renown. In Évora, PhD was another luminary of the Iberian culture of that time, the Jesuit Francisco Suárez, then a professor at the University of Coimbra. Here taught for a while Pedro da Fonseca, considered the most important philosopher Portuguese sixteenth century, celebrated the effort of neo-scholastic renovation of Aristotelian thought. Despite the attempts of modernization and openness to new scientific spirit that characterize the eighteenth-century university, it must be acknowledged, however, that the example of his elder sister of Coimbra, his efforts did not translate into actual opening of minds to the needs of new times. Despite the high individual value of many teachers, the education system as a whole, proved misfit and outdated. Évora participated thus the global trend of turning back to Transpirenaica Europe that characterized the majority of elites and Iberian cultural institutions of the Old Regime. When the political and cultural climate of the mid-eighteenth century began to reveal hostile to the Jesuits, no wonder that the University of Évora has been easily become a target of the reform and centralist policy of Pombal. On February 8, 1759 - two hundred years after the foundation - the University was surrounded by cavalry troops, as a result of the decree of expulsion and banishment of the Jesuits. After a long time in prison under arms, the masters were eventually taken to Lisbon, where many were imprisoned in the notorious Fort Junqueira. Others were summarily deported to the Papal States. From the second half of the nineteenth century, settled in the noble building Henrique's the Lyceum of Évora, to which the Queen Dona Maria II granted the prerogative of the use of "cloak and cassock", in keeping with university tradition of the city and the building . In 1973, by decree of the then Minister of Education, José Veiga Simão, he created the University Institute of Evora which was to be abolished in 1979, to make way for the new University of Évora. History The Polytechnic Institute of Tomar was created in 1973 but because of the portuguese revolution in 1974, the process of installation did not materialize. In 1979, was established as School of Technology of Tomar (ESTT), not integrated, whose installation commission would only be appointed in October 1982 consisting by the President, Professor Pacheco de Amorim, and vowels, Dr Julio Dias das Neves and Dr. Maria do Rosário Baaeta Neves. The politics of higher education in Portugal defined that could only be a Polytechnic by District and thus in 1985, the ESTT was integrated in the Polytechnic of Santarém. Later, in 1994, its name was changed to the School of Technology and Management Tomar (ESTGT). In 1986 came into operation the first undergraduate programmes of IPT: Business & Management (Head Professor José Ribeiro Mendes), Construction (Head Professor António Paiva) and Pulp and Paper Technology (Head Professor Rui Santa Ovaia), with a total of about 90 students. In 1987 came into operation the undergraduate programme of Graphic Arts (Head Dr António Guilhermino Pires) and, in 1988, the Course of Specialized Studies in Art, Archaeology and Restoration (Head Professor Luis Osterbeek). In 1996, the then Minister of Education and Science, Eduardo Marçal Grilo, did publish the creation of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT), with the School of Management (ESGT) and the School of Technology (ESTT), both in Tomar, now in its new campus, with effect from January 1, 1997. Was named President's Professor Dr. Pacheco de Amorim, and indicated to his aides Professor José Faria Paixão, Professor José Ribeiro Mendes, cumulating with the Directorate of School of Management, and Professor Rui Santa Ovaia cumulating with the Directorate of School of Technology. The statutes of the IPT and of the schools have now been approved and Professor Conceição Fortunato took the direction of ESGT and Professor Luis Merca assumed the direction of ESTT. In 1999, was created in the IPT, the School of Technology of Abrantes (ESTA), directed by Professor Eugenio Pina de Almeida. In 2005, was appointed to head the ESTA, Professor Miguel Pinto dos Santos. In the 2005 elections, was elected President Professor António Pires da Silva. In the 2010 elections was elected the current President Eugenio Pina de Almeida. Directors were appointed to ESTT Professor João Coroado, for ESGT Professor Conceição Fortunato and for the ESTA, Professor Luis Ferreira. Facts and Personalities A reference at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar is Professor José Bayolo Pacheco de Amorim, being the President of the institution since its beginning in 1982 until 2005. IPT attributed its name to the Main Auditorium. Professor António Pires da Silva was the second President's between 2005 and 2010., Today's Member of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the Support Office for the presidency. Professor Julio Dias das Neves belonged from 1982 to 1996, to the management of IPT, having been assigned its name to the Auditorium O106. Belonged to the General Council till 2014. The first Professor, Luis Oliveira Dias, took office on February 27, 1984. Joaquim Pombo, from Business & Management, José Casimiro Pereira, Vitor Gaspar and Natércia Santos, from Pulp and Paper Technology, and Orlando Lopes da Fonseca, from Construction are the first graduates, Professors or High Technicians today working at IPT. • In 1989 it launched the first stone Campus IPT in Tomar and the first classes began at this Campus in 1991. • In 2014 the IPT has to offer 21 Bachelor, Masters 21 and 17 Technological Specialisation Courses. There are about 3000 students. • By 2014, IPT has already enrolled about 13,000 students, and graduates have already been over 10,000. Awards The Polytechnic Institute of Tomar has received several awards and distinctions, either as an institution, either within their schools or their courses. The Institute was awarded by the European Commission with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) Label, ie the recognition of an excellent use of the European Credit Transfer System. We are one of the institutions of European education with a European best mobilities with the respective credit recognition skills acquisition. ISCAP History The ISCAP with the name we know it today - the Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto, stems from the Decree-Law No. 327/76, of 6 May, although its historical roots are much more distant. Indeed, it was in 1886 that the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Porto was founded (Decree of 30 December 1886), the then Minister Emidio Navarro that lays the theoretical foundations of the organization of industrial and commercial education in… [+] our country. In 1891, the technical education reforms of John Franco remained unchanged industrial and commercial sections of this Institute, not turning them into independent schools. The basic courses of trade were removed and the upper reaches is reduced to three years and divided into two degrees. The Industrial and Commercial Institute of Porto see, in 1896, being recognized its Colleges, equivalent to those of other schools: the former Superior of Commerce degree (created by Decree of 30 December 1886) and the Higher Course taught in Industrial Institutes and Commercial. The Industrial and Commercial Institute of Porto went through a troubled path, the lack of definitive guidance, until 1918, the date of publication of Decree No. 5029, of December 1, which separated its commercial part, deploying it in a Commercial Institute Port and a Higher Institute of Trade Port. This date gives the first time the separation of Commercial Institutes in relation to the Industrial Institutes, a situation that continued until 1924. This segmentation is however temporary, as quickly merge these new areas of knowledge and only in 1933 it opts for a final segmentation. The then dubbed the Commercial Institute of Porto is known at the time for holding the highest level of market studies of the northern capital and also for being an average technical educational establishment for the ambience of higher education in various aspects of their academic life. The reform operated by Decree-Law No. 38031, of 4 November 1950, in no way alters the characteristics of this educational establishment. On the contrary, the 1974 political climate comes operate profound changes in the life of the Institute, because at the time, grow in importance the markedly technical courses. In this new context, the country's progress demanded the good performance of senior staff, which at the time became scarce. Thus, the ISCAP, is recognized as one of the schools that, over the centuries, formed generations of professionals and is inserted in the higher education institutions. This event enables graduates by Commercial Institutes receive the designation of graduates, a degree that "is very qualified for admission to training for teacher of the 6th group of professional technical education". This legislation is a precursor of what will later integrate commercial institutes in higher education network - Decree-Law No. 327/76 of 6 May. Thus is born the current designation of Supreme Accounting and Administration Institutes, with the status of "higher education, with legal personality and administrative and educational autonomy," empowered to confer "the degrees of bachelor, graduate and doctorate." In the academic year 1975/76, the Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto passes the minister, under Decree-Law No. 313/75, the Bachelor courses of Accounting and Administration and Languages and Secretariat. These courses were subsequently regulated by Decree No. 918/83 of 7 October and sofrearam successive adjustments according to the evolution of economic and accounting sciences and the requirements of the labor market. The Institute lives, however, a turbulent period after the date 1976, due to the existing uncertainty in the country. Institutes, empowered to confer the degrees of Bachelor, Degree and Doctorate, they should be integrated in University Education, but later legal provisions sought their environment in Polytechnic. This vagueness context only ended with the identification of schools / higher institutes that resulted from the conversion or evolution of previous schools and the integration of the Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto in 1988, by Decree-Law No o 70/88 of 3 March. This new legal framework from the fact that the institutes aim for higher education of qualified technicians in the fields of Accounting and Administration and promote, in a geographical context, the exchange between education and economic and social structures. They were also found similarities between the objectives of the Polytechnic and the Institutes of Accounting and Administration, which has strengthened this new framework. Decree-Law No. 443/85 of 24 October, establishes the organic structure of the Higher Institutes of Accounting and Administration also states that its teaching staff pass to be governed by Decree-Law No. 185/81, of July 1st, who created the career Polytechnic. However, they were also created the Bachelor courses and Specialized Higher Studies, degrees that of the Education Act expressly qualifies as own the Polytechnic. This translated to, in practical terms, to grant a "license equivalent to Bachelor for all academic and professional purposes." In 1991, it created the Committee on Accounting and Administration followed by Specialized Translation, the latter in 1995. At the end of the academic year 1997/98, the ISCAP placed in the labor market enabled students with the Committee "s Auditing, Financial Management, Accounting and Business Administration, Management Advisor, International Trade (International Management branches and Customs Administration) and Specialized translation. Because of the carried out redesign, the ISCAP passes to teach, since 1998, the BA Accounting and Administration (branches Accounting and Administration, Financial Management and Audit), International Business, Languages and Secretariat (branch Secretariat Management and Translation specialized) and Marketing. In the academic year 2001/2002 also would be given the branch of Public Administration. Now new facilities, officially opened in 1996, receives ISCAP the end of this decade the Master of Accounting and Administration, organized by the University of Minho, and in partnership with the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Although opened in 1996, the move to the new building takes place a year earlier in November. In the academic year 2003/2004 the Translation Branch Specialized would be called Translation and Interpretation Specialized, change approved by Order No. 602/2003 of 21 July. In 2004/2005 is created the course of Corporate Communication Degree also in two phases in the 1st attributed cycle, likewise, the Bachelor's degree (6 semesters) and the 2nd, the degree of Bachelor (2 semesters) approved by Order No. 161/2006 of 20 February. It is thus distinguished from the previous by the fact that a total duration of only four. However, this plan only prevail in this academic year and was currently suitable to the agreement of Bologna, which led to the establishment of the degree in just three years. Is still awaited approval for the operation of their Master, the same name, whose scheduled duration is 4 semesters. In the academic year 2005/2006 also the course of Languages and Secretariat was adequate to the Bologna Agreement by adopting the name "Management Assistants" and going, so to have a duration of only 6 semesters. It was further proposed the operation of three Masters: Assisted Translation Computer (scientific field of foreign languages and literatures); Specialized Translation and Interpretation (scientific field of foreign languages and literatures) and management consultants (scientific area of management sciences). In the academic year 2007/2008 came into operation the Accounting and Administration courses, International Trade and Marketing appropriate to the Bologna Agreement. These degrees now have six semesters. their master's degrees were also proposed but are still awaiting approval of the International Trade and Marketing.

The School of Health Sciences is a recent organic unit of the University of Minho, created to ensure graduate and postgraduate education, research and other specialized services within the Health Sciences domain. Founded in 2000, the School of Health Sciences (ECS) aims to train doctors and other health professionals throughout life. The ECS offers a Medical Degree, which has an innovative curriculum design. To fulfil its mission, the ECS has highly motivated and qualified faculty, currently consisting of about 80 members, of whom 50% are PhDs and 70% are doctors, all of whom are researchers in the school’s research institute Life and Health Sciences Research Institute -ICVS). The ECS integrates a research institute (ICVS) that encompasses 3 main research Domains (Neurosciences, Surgical Sciences and Microbiology and Infection) with more than 200 researchers, and has published over 1000 papers in international peer-reviewed journals of relevant impact factor, since 2003 (year it was created). The ICVS is associated with a strategic partner, the 3B’s Research Group - Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics (3B’s). The ICVS/3B's Associate Laboratory (AL) centres its activities in the Health Sciences, namely in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, and in Biomedical Science & Engineering/Materials Science & Engineering (Biomaterials). This interface Health-Sciences/Technologies pursues the goal of generating value through the development of innovative products and services, resulting from internationally highly competitive research. This partnership has resulted in several spin-off companies that range from medical and surgical devices to software solutions. In 2012, the ICVS/3B’s established a partnership with the Hospital of Braga in a Clinical Academic Centre (2CA-BRAGA), a non-profit organization with a focus on research, clinical care, education and training. The 2CA-BRAGA offers a full-range of clinical research services, with a wide spectrum infrastructure and with full technical support for research projects, clinical trials and validation studies of medical devices. At this time, the 2CA-Braga is responsible for 40% of all clinical trials held in Portugal.
Created by Decree-Law 264/99 of 14 July, the School of Technology and Management Lamego came into operation in the academic year 2000/2001, with management courses and Information and Tourism Management, Cultural and Heritage. In 2002-03 became operational the course of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering, in 2004- 2005, the Accounting and Auditing courses and Human Services, in 2005-2006 the Tourist Information courses and Administration Secretariat, in 2007/2008… [+] the course Social Work Post-employment and in 2008/2009 the Accounting Course and Post-audit work. The school is an organic unit of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu endowed with administrative autonomy, Scientific and Pedagogical. Dedicated to the initial training in scientific fields that most directly can intervene in the activity of the economic and productive sectors of their area, the training offers in the area of Tourism, Management, Accounting, Administration, Information Technology, Telecommunications and Social Services, have- proved interesting bets, not only for daytime courses but, increasingly, for courses that run after work and evening classes. The availability of training in post-working hours have helped to capture new audiences, which is an asset in the qualification and requalification of assets. Also in this aspect the postgraduate offer has made another training area with increasing demand, especially for all those who seek to improve their skills in the face of every major demands of the labor market.
