Philosophy and science don't mix. Or do they? What we nowadays call "science" used to be part of "philosophy." It is not without reason that Isaac Newton called his physical masterpiece "The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy." And today, the two are still closely connected. Our current worldview is strongly shaped by scientific thought. We look to science for both answers to our theoretical questions and solutions to our practical problems. The Master's programme in Philosophy and Science analyses the relation of philosophy and science in terms of their historical development, as well as the current situation. How did the scientific worldview come from? What are its ingredients? What have models for the relationship between philosophical and scientific thinking been proposed?... [-]

Programme

Why are there so many people called Dennis living in Denver, for example? And why does one person become addicted and not another? Behavioural scientists at Radboud University know the answers. The Master's in Behavioural Science distinguishes itself internationally by its multidisciplinary approach and the special laboratory facilities that are available for studying human behaviour.

The Master’s programme is closely related to the research being carried out in the internationally renowned Behavioural Science Institute. This institute has several unique facilities for carrying out experimental research. One example is our Virtual Reality Laboratory where we can observe people’s (often unconscious) behaviour. In order to study the way in which addicts behave we have a Bar Lab. Our mobile lab is also unique. This EEG bus makes it possible for us to measure processes in the brain at specific locations like school, for example. Finally, we are able to use the new EEG, fMRI and MEG facilities of the Donders Institute for Neuroimaging. Of course you too – as a Master’s student – will be able to use these facilities to increase your capacity to manage new experimental research techniques.... [-]

Programme

How do humans, animals and plants adapt to their environment? This question is central in the Radboud University Master’s programme in Biology. The biologists at the University are just as aware of the larger whole – the ecosystems, river courses and populations – as they are of smaller building blocks such as cells, genes and pollen. In this way, they are able to reveal nature’s fundamental mechanisms. Our top scientists will take you with them on their voyage of discovery.

Specialisations

The programme offers seven specialisations:

Adaptive organismsA challenging research-orientated programme that covers the fundamental processes involved in stress responses of plants, micro-organisms and animals. In the Adaptive Organisms specialisation, you’ll become an expert in stress adaptation of individual organisms. Communities and EcosystemsIn this Master’s specialisation, you will get insight in the relations between individuals, populations and communities with their environment. You will also learn how they react to environmental stress. This fundamental knowledge can be applied in nature protection and restoration or in nature-based industrial processes, for example water purification. MicrobiologyImproving health and environment, and providing in-depth insight into present-day clinical microbiology and microbial research in general. In this specialisation you will study the interface between fundamental and applied ecology and medical microbiology Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management Double Degree programmeThe specialisation in Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management is an international programme for future water managers, combining ecology, hydrology, and socio-economics. Programme

Our Master's programme in Business Administration - unlike other similar programmes - emphasizes the social processes that constitute organisations. How do social processes determine the ways in which organisations and management operations and perform? In addition, in Nijmegen, we have chosen an integrated approach. This programme is closely associated with the research carried out within the Institute of Management Research, where the focus is on research into relationship management, institutional dynamics, decision making and innovative management. You will become familiar with both the theoretical and practical aspects of your special subject. The programme combines a thorough training in methodology with action-based learning: you apply the theory you have learned to concrete cases and learn to develop appropriate solutions. And, in our Visa Skills Lab, you can use computers to make scenario analyses and simulate decision-making processes within organisations.... [-]

Spatial planners are fascinated by on-going and future changes in cities and regions and take on the role as managers of those spatial transformations - think of: regenerating shopping districts or old industrial sites; designating water retention areas; shaping urban mobility concepts for the future. Related challenges vary in scale, from individual property to European policymaking. The program sub-title ‘managing smart cities and regions’ reflects the challenges of current and coming urban societies, at a time that ambitions for a ‘New Urban Agenda’ for the 21st century are formulated, with policies and strategies to create more sustainable and equitable urban spaces. Upon completion students will have knowledge of:... [-]
