Introduction

The Iztapalapa unit was the first to start construction work on buildings and facilities, today it is considered the most complete unit, according to its original design, which despite having been modified, has managed to adapt to changing needs of new scientific, social and cultural events. A 177,955 square meter property was selected to the east of the Federal District, in the Iztapalapa delegation to start the works. This place was ideal for its growing urbanization and for the settlement of small and medium-sized companies.

The design shows independent buildings in the form of rectangular prisms connected by walkways and green areas, unlike the Azcapotzalco and Xochimilco units, where the buildings are connected to each other.

Its construction was planned in six stages, the first four executed between 1973 and 1976. During the first and second stages 1973-74, the Aulas 1 building (now building "D") was built, with 4,941 square meters; the Aulas 2 building (now building "C") with 4,368 square meters; the Administrative Office building (now building "A") with 3,639 square meters. Near Building "A" the buildings of Light Laboratories 1 (now building "R") with 5,844 square meters were built; bathrooms, dressing rooms, squash and cafeteria building, with 5,299 square meters. Counting the required urbanization, they result in a total of 24,091 square meters.
