The path to innovative leadership

The African School of Economics is headquartered in Abomey-Calavi, (Cotonou, Benin). We currently offer four graduate programs at the Masters level: Master in Mathematics, Economics and Statistics (MMES), Master in Business Administration (MBA), Master in Development Studies (MDS) and Master in Public Administration (MPA). We also have an executive education program and a Ph.D. program in Economics.Check our website to learn more about our current and future programs.



ASE is the expansion of the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IERPE), founded in 2004, into a full-fledged pan-African university. A total of 95 students are enrolled at ASE (71 MMES program, 24 MBA) for the academic year 2015-2016, coming from 15 different countries. Faculty members (19) come from top universities from the US, Canada and Europe.

The African School of Economics combines African roots with a global outlook, and we are eager to fulfill our commitments by pursuing excellence in the following aspects:

Master in Development Studies (MDS)

This two-year program offers academic training in social sciences related to development, featuring two tracks: Economic History, and Sociology and Political Science. It is offered only to full-time students and provides foundational economics training to students alongside locally-tailored coursework in other social sciences. [+]

Master in Development Studies (MDS) This two-year program offers academic training in social sciences related to development, featuring two tracks: Economic History, and Sociology and Political Science. It is offered only to full-time students and provides foundational economics training to students alongside locally-tailored coursework in other social sciences. It is aimed at students with bachelor degrees in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy, and Legal Studies. The MDS program seeks to prepare students for a wide variety of paths, including doctoral studies in the social sciences, research opportunities, and work in public, non-profit or private sectors in a range of roles. Master in Mathematics, Economics, and Statistics (MMES)

The structure of our MMES program is nearly identical to that of the first two years of a North American doctoral program in Economics. It combines advanced training in quantitative methods with a strong foundation in economic theory and research design. [+]

Master in Mathematics, Economics, and Statistics (MMES) The structure of our MMES program is nearly identical to that of the first two years of a North American doctoral program in Economics. It combines advanced training in quantitative methods with a strong foundation in economic theory and research design. Students who successfully complete the MMES program are well-positioned to complete doctoral-level studies in economics in North America or Europe. MMES graduates also go on to work as research assistants field-based economic studies and in evaluation roles in the public sector, at international agencies, and in NGOs. Students have the opportunity to participate in research conducted by ASE’s Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy. This is an empirically oriented program designed for students and mid-career professionals with a bachelor degree in Mathematics, Statistics or Economics, although other students with strong quantitative skills could also be successful in the program. This program offers three sub-fields: Econometric Theory, Econometrics and Applied Economics. [-]

Master in Public Administration (MPA)

ASE’s MPA curriculum is designed to offer an education superior to comparable programs in Benin and the wider region by featuring rigorous training in Statistics and Economics as well a tight connection with government and international agencies. [+]

Master in Public Administration (MPA) ASE’s MPA curriculum is designed to offer an education superior to comparable programs in Benin and the wider region by featuring rigorous training in Statistics and Economics as well a tight connection with government and international agencies. The structure of the ASE’s MPA program is similar to that of our MBA programs. It includes two tracks: Public Management and International Relations. This program enables students to gain skills in designing, administering and evaluating public policy that will empower them to gain top positions in government and international organizations. [-]
