Most of the pressing questions and problems of communities, nations and the planet can be explored using the tools and approaches of geography. Geography, the study of human and Earth system processes in space and time, incorporates principles of mathematics, social science, and natural science to analyze and interpret change in the environment using a range of cutting-edge geospatial imaging and modeling tools.

Our Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences graduate degree program is built on internationally recognized faculty research programs within CEOAS, with Oregon State University currently ranked #3 in the world for Oceanography. The OEAS program pairs graduate students with faculty advisors in the student’s selected concentration area and encourages rapid engagement in research at the forefront of the respective field.

Ranked among the top 20 research programs nationwide in the areas of ecology, evolution, and behavior, integrative biology also enjoys the distinction of being the highest-ranked scientific program in the state of Oregon.

The biochemistry and biophysics graduate program has a cutting-edge experimental focus on solving significant research questions on myriad molecular mechanisms underlying life and disease and creating marketable innovative technologies.

The master of science degree from the Department of Wood Science is unique and highly-collaborative and aimed at students who desire dynamic careers in industry, higher education, government, and nonprofits. Students study basic wood science and wood science in the global context of the forest sector and work with their lead professors on a one-on-one basis to determine the focus of their research. The program is firmly rooted in Oregon’s local geography—the state has long been a center of forest products manufacturing —but Oregon State’s presence, and much of the department’s research, is global. There are many opportunities for students to partner with industry members and collaborators – both in the U.S. and around the world – to study abroad, participate in graduate assistantships and other hands-on learning experiences.

The ocean sustains communities and livelihoods, controls climate, serves as a highway for global commerce, represents a potential energy source and provides recreation and inspiration. It is also at risk, as climate change, pollution and other human activities take their toll. To tackle these problems, future leaders and policy makers will need a broad background in both natural and social sciences.

The Department of Statistics offers graduate work leading to MS and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics. Students can concentrate on theory or applications, and programs can be tailored to emphasize such areas of interest as ecology, engineering, forestry, genetics/genomics and computational biology, mathematics, or oceanography. All students obtain experience as statistical consultants for problems in a variety of areas, including agriculture, biology, forestry, exercise physiology, and engineering. Students interested in environmental sciences have the opportunity to obtain experience both in and outside the classroom with statistical methods for environmental data.

The Master of Science in Sustainable Forest Management is appropriate for students who want two or more years of formal graduate work and who wish to develop a limited research specialization. Designed primarily for pursuing careers in research or teaching or those seeking professional development through in-depth research on a topic of interest, the MS program can be either a terminal degree or the first step toward a doctorate. The program provides an opportunity for independent research to be reported in a formal Master’s Thesis. MS students choose from one of the six SFM areas of concentration.

The finance option gives you a strong quantitative and analytical focus as you study access to and use of money and capital. Your capstone project will focus on mergers and acquisitions, international finance or ethics, and corporate social responsibility. Our master’s of science option integrates foundational work in finance and accounting and business analytics to meet the demand for advanced financial decision-making. You’ll learn to apply core concepts and tools in the finance discipline that address current business challenges and to evaluate the tradeoff between risk and reward using appropriate quantitative methods. Courses examine three areas: core business knowledge, a deep understanding of marketing principles, and the analytical tools to conduct and translate data analysis to value-enhancing actions. Supply Chain Analytics Our concentration in supply chain analytics is the intersection of two areas in which organizations need trained and experienced leaders: supply chain and logistics management and business analytics. In today’s complex supply chain systems, businesses need real-time information and leaders who possess strategic decision-making abilities. You learn how to use data management and data analytics to explore the characteristics of supply chains and identify value-enhancing efficiencies.
