The ISLANDS programme combines a thorough training in scientific research with a thematic specialization in Islands and Sustainability. It also provides multi-faceted training of research skills for social science and environmental research, including Individual Research Training by senior staff and training to work in a multi- and interdisciplinary research group. ISLANDS students will be required to study at the University of Groningen in the first semester and the first half of the second semester of the first year of the programme. Then they study at one of the island-based universities of the consortium where they undertake a Research Internship Module. After returning to Groningen, students will again go to an island-based university to undertake their Master's thesis project in the second semester of the second year. ISLANDS graduates receive a double degree from the University of Groningen (including an acknowledgement that this is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master degree involving all partner universities) and the island-based University. The ISLANDS programme builds on the existing Research Master in Spatial Sciences programme at the University of Groningen (RUG).

The two-year Research Master's in Spatial Sciences has two key features. First, it allows students maximum scientific freedom to learn and discover. Second, it lets students develop serious scientific research skills. Throughout the programme we take inspiration from Einstein's words: 'I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious'. Research Master students don't have to be extraordinarily talented or gifted. But students need to have a passionate curiosity about people and places. With this driving curiosity, the research master Spatial Sciences is a good choice.

MSc Programmes in Natural Sciences Geographic Sciences Spatial Science
Students who earn an MSc in Spatial Science are interested in understanding the world and its people through the study of spatial information and relationships. Earning a Master of Science in this academic discipline gives students advanced knowledge that will prepare them for work that describes both natural and built environments.
What is an MSc in Spatial Science? This course of study often includes multiple disciplines, such as land surveying, cartography and hydrography. Students can choose to specialize in either land or marine environments or a combination of both. An advanced degree in this area may include courses in geographical visualization, GPS, geodesy, remote sensing, and offshore wind energy.
These studies have a broad range of uses, including finding solutions for environment problems and hazards. Spatial sciences aim to manage natural resources by accurate measurements and an understanding of the relationships between both land and water features. Students will learn research methods and benefit from the experience of professionals within their field of interest.
The costs of earning an MSc in Spatial Science will vary greatly depending on the individual program and school. Students should check with their school of interest to check on the length of their programs and information on tuition.
After earning an advanced degree in spatial sciences, students will be in demand in several industries. Graduates find work in mine surveying, marine management, mineral extraction, and in the development of environmentally sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices. Among the organizations that employ spatial scientists are agencies that manage marine resources, government departments that work with aerial and satellite imagery, coastal authorities, leisure and tourist industries, engineering and surveying companies, and cartography industries.
