TRANSatlantic FORestry Master (TRANSFOR-M) is a two-year Master's degree programme leading to a European and a Canadian Master's degrees in forestry and environmental management. As a TRANSFOR-M student, you will study modern sustainable forestry and environmental management approaches and gain multicultural perspectives on environmental, economic, and social issues. Your studies will consist of one-year studies in Finland and one-year studies in Canada.

Looking at the forest and forest ecosystem from various perspectives: ecosystem analysis and modeling, ecosystems sciences, and tropical forestry – you can specialize in one of these three foci as your individually chosen forestry topic. In addition to the compulsory modules, you can extend your course of studies thanks to a large set of options, internships, and international visits. Graduate study is offered in the Department of Forestry leading to the degrees of Master of Science in forestry and Doctor of Philosophy in forest resources. Specialized areas of study include forest business, forest management and economics, forest genetics, forest hydrology and soils, silviculture, forest biometrics, forest photogrammetry and remote sensing, forest tree and seed physiology, forest harvesting, and operations, and forest ecophysiology. The Master of Science in Sustainable Forest Management is appropriate for students who want two or more years of formal graduate work and who wish to develop a limited research specialization. Designed primarily for pursuing careers in research or teaching or those seeking professional development through in-depth research on a topic of interest, the MS program can be either a terminal degree or the first step toward a doctorate. The program provides an opportunity for independent research to be reported in a formal Master’s Thesis. MS students choose from one of the six SFM areas of concentration.

Master of Science (MS) A research proposal and thesis based on original research are major components of the MS degree. The program normally requires 2 – 3 years for completion, and can be tailored for students with interests in forest management, ecology and environmental sciences, economics, engineering, or business.

The Urban Forestry Master of Science Graduate Program was established in the fall of 1998. The mission of the graduate program is to provide graduate students with a curriculum that offers sound academic training and experiential learning activities for professional career positions in governmental agencies, research organizations, and private firms. The program utilizes an interdisciplinary, total quality management approach to train students so that they can ultimately address critical issues and concerns in the science and management of urban forestry and natural resources. Each student will follow a prescribed program of course work and conduct a thesis research or capstone project tailored toward emerging issues or problems in urban forestry.
