This degree produces graduates who are able to identify, formulate, analyze and solve complex biosystems engineering problems by using appropriate tools and techniques, including independent research, and who can effectively communicate to technical and non-technical audiences. Graduates are prepared for employment in national laboratories, industry, and universities, and are able to design, develop, regulate, research, and manage the systems and technologies needed to produce, transport, store and use natural resources to meet humanity’s most fundamental needs such as safe and abundant food, clean water, fiber, and renewable sources of fuel; and bio-based life-enhancing and life-saving products.

Graduate students enrolled in the Chemical and Biological Engineering master’s programs have the option of a master of science degree with or without a thesis. Those students enrolled in the M.S. program have the option to complete thesis research work in addition to the yearlong coursework required for a master's degree without a thesis.

The Bioengineering master's program provides a broad engineering and biotechnology curriculum while offering a focus on a specific engineering track that best fits students' interests and career choices. The Bioengineering, MS prepares students for research and professional practice in bioengineering and related fields. This program comprises four core areas: biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical imaging, and neuroengineering while offering three different options. Students can choose to focus their graduate work toward a career in academia (thesis option), or in the industry (practicum or coursework option).

The MS in Biological Engineering is oriented toward executing engineering solutions for feed, food and fiber production and/or post-harvest processing problems having an intensive biological/microbiological dimension.
