The degree of Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering (MSc in AERO) is awarded for successfully completing the requirements of a program of study, which includes taught courses as well as a thesis. The thesis is an independent investigation of specialized areas within the general field of aerospace engineering and associated disciplines.

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics offers a Master of Science in aerospace engineering and mechanics degree via an on-campus program and an off-campus (distance learning) program through the College of Continuing Studies. An MSAEM can be earned by coursework only or by a combination of coursework and an approved thesis. Most distance learning students elect to complete the coursework-only degree option. On-campus students supported by assistantships are expected to complete an approved thesis.

The Master of Science in Astronautical Engineering is designed for those with B.S. degrees in science and engineering who desire to work in the space sector of the aerospace industry, government research and development centers, and laboratories. In some cases the applicant may be required to take 1 or 2 deficiency courses (upper-division undergraduate courses). The decision to require deficiency courses is made by the Astronautics program coordinators.

UNM ECE offers a highly affordable and Carnegie Research 1 (for highest level of research activity) online M.Sc. degree in Space Systems Engineering concentration.
