The progress of all master's candidates is monitored biannually by the supervisor and the postgraduate coordinator. A candidate's study may be terminated if the progress is unsatisfactory or if the candidate is unable to finish his/her studies during the prescribed period.

The Master of Science (MSc) is a two-year degree which encompasses both coursework and research. The first year involves mainly coursework and preliminary research preparation. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to existing fields of research, or to begin to develop new areas.

Within conservation science, there is increasing recognition of the value of genetic data to support management decisions. However, scientists and managers with the skills and knowledge to apply population genetic theory to conservation practice are lacking. Within this arena, wildlife forensics is an exciting new field that is attracting increasing global attention in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade.

The Master of Wildlife Management (MWLM) degree is a three-semester 180-point postgraduate degree designed to train students with the skills necessary for employment in some aspect of wildlife or ecological management or research.

The greatest challenge facing conservation biologists today is the preservation of the world’s biodiversity in the face of considerable human demands on space and resources. The Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology offers programs leading to the master of science in entomology, M.S. in wildlife ecology and the doctor of philosophy in entomology and wildlife ecology. Graduate students in these fields couple a focus on insects or vertebrates with a broad knowledge of other related fields of biology, especially ecology. The M.S. degree programs prepare students for pursuit of the Ph.D. While it is possible to go directly to the Ph.D. program, the department faculty prefers that students complete the M.S. before being admitted or reclassified into the doctoral degree program in entomology and wildlife ecology.

The new MSc in Bioenvironmental Monitoring and Assessment (BEMA) is designed to prepare its graduates for future employment in the fields of bioenvironmental monitoring, population assessment, wildlife management, and conservation biology. Many of today’s pressing environmental questions can be addressed either through robust analysis of existing ecological datasets or by conducting original research using especially novel and innovative approaches.
