Global changes ask for a comprehensive scientific approach, and an international multidisciplinary orientation and require a new mindset toward the water and coastal management problems. In response to these challenges and to provide an inspiring atmosphere for the development of an academic and professional career, we designed our unique Double Degree Master (DDM) program 'Water and Coastal Management', merging the strongest expertise of the two partner universities, the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and Carl-von-Ossietzky-University Oldenburg (Germany).

The MSc MARRES was designed in response to the recent evolution of the job market due to the emergence of Blue Growth worldwide. Our interdisciplinary and international master's programs equip students with knowledge, skills, and network to enter research, conservation, consultancy firms, and develop their own innovation opportunities.

The 2-year master programme in “Master of Science in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management” (Oceans & Lakes) addresses students with a background in Sciences. Oceans & Lakes is an inter-university programme organized by the Faculty of Sciences of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Free University of Brussels), Universiteit Antwerpen (UAntwerpen, Antwerp University) and Universiteit Gent (UGent, Ghent University). The students are provided with strong fundamental and applied knowledge and prepared for an active role in the scientific research and management of marine and lacustrine systems.

The marine environment and coastal areas are of strategic importance associated with the large number of uses, resources and services they provide. A large part of the activities carried out in these environments can cause environmental impacts on the ecosystems and, on occasions, be a source of conflicts between users. This means that the sustainable management of the marine environment constitutes one of the basic objectives of the European Union to guarantee both environmental sustainability and the competitiveness of the economic activities that are nourished by this environment.

The MPhil program aims to train postgraduate students to conduct independent research in Marine Environmental Science. Submission and successful defence of a thesis based on original research are required.

It is also at risk, as climate change, pollution and other human activities take their toll. To tackle these problems, future leaders and policy makers will need a broad background in both natural and social sciences.
