Introduction
In the twenty-first century it makes little sense to study Spanish as a foreign language in isolation from the professional contexts in which it is used. As such, the master's degree provides thorough training in the structure of the Spanish language and a broad understanding of its professional uses, through a combination of comprehensive theoretical learning and applied activities.
Summary of generic competences
- Capacity to evaluate the linguistic and communicative quality of texts produced in Spanish and to interpret their ideological viewpoint and communicative purpose.
- Capacity to work independently and display the entrepreneurial skills to become fully immersed in professional or academic life.
Summary of specific competences
- Capacity to evaluate the conceptual complexity of the terms Spanish and foreign language with respect to learners and their characteristics (age, personal, social and cultural circumstances, needs, abilities, expectations and beliefs), in order to adapt the teaching and specialized use of Spanish to the needs of the classroom or recipients.
- Ability to apply in-depth (descriptive and explanatory) cultural and pragmatic linguistic knowledge of Spanish language use in context to the teaching of Spanish in the areas of Spanish as a foreign language and Spanish for specific purposes.
- Specific, specialized knowledge of linguistic and cultural variations in the Hispanic world, to ensure that prospective students acquire a broad competence in the use of the Spanish language.
- Capacity to apply appropriate strategies in the design of materials for the teaching and learning of grammatical, pragmatic and cultural aspects of language.

Curriculum
To obtain the master's degree in Spanish as a Foreign Language in Professional Environments, students must successfully complete 60 credits of face-to-face training, the 12 credits corresponding to the in-company or institutional placement, and the 18 credits corresponding to the final project.
The program is divided into the following modules:
- Fundamental Principles of Spanish as a Foreign Language in Professional Environments, with a total study load of 42 credits, comprising seven 6-credit compulsory subjects. Students must complete all of the subjects.
- Additional Training in Spanish as a Foreign Language in Professional Environments, comprising twelve 3-credit optional subjects. Students must complete six of the twelve subjects.
- In-company or Institutional Placement, with an equivalent study load of 12 credits, designed to give students first-hand experience of professional practice. The placement is carried out at a company or institution whose primary activity is directed related to the field of Spanish as a foreign language.
- Final Project, which consists of a research-based project on a topic related to the subjects completed during the master's degree and the associated research areas.

The master's degree provides training in grammar, preparation of learning materials, research and development of resources, cultural themes linked to the study of Spanish as a foreign language, languages and related areas of expertise. The program is professionally oriented and permits students to complete their course work in professional contexts where Spanish as a foreign language is required. It also provides the theoretical and practical knowledge required to embark on doctoral studies, for those who wish to do so.

Program delivery
The educational methodology is based on merging theoretical lectures and working practices (teaching or mentorship by a master teacher) even autonomous student work sessions. Participation, interaction and discussion in class –in oral individual or group presentations- and the writing essays are de basis of the subject.
