Introduction
Master in Industrial Engineering and Management
This 2nd cycle, developed in line with the 1st and 3rd cycles in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM), aims to graduate people with the ability to plan, manage and control complex systems, in a value stream perspective, providing students with a solid background for performing qualified functions in manufacturing and service organizations. The study cycle (SC) focuses in students’ education in the IEM field, complementing with other engineering sciences and management. Furthermore, the SC also seeks to offer graduates a background in emergent areas, through the optional curricular units (CU) offered. It is also intended that students develop problem-solving competencies in real contexts, as well as scientific research competencies through the attendance to the Dissertation/Project/Internship CU. In this CU students have the opportunity to immerse in a real context of work, facing the challenges that characterise the functions of an IEM professional.

Career Opportunities
The holders of the master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) develop a multiplicity of knowledge and competencies in several areas of knowledge. In addition to the acquisition of advanced knowledge in the specialization area of the study cycle, other competencies can be emphasized, such as:
- Complex problems formulation and solving, reflection and decision making
- Selection and application of existent methods and methodologies, as well as development of new approaches, with creativity
- Collection, analysis and interpretation of data and knowledge production
- Design and improvement of complex products, systems and business processes, using a systemic and interorganizational perspective
- Team management and relationships management in multicultural and multidisciplinary contexts
Research competencies are also privileged, enabling the prosecution of studies with autonomy and an independent lifelong learning, as well as competencies required for the digital transformation. Thus, the flexible and versatile profile of the holders of a master’s degree in IEM will support their professional activity in a wide range of sectors. Taking into account the competencies acquired in the IEM specialization area, complemented with other engineering science areas and management, the holders of a master’s degree in IEM are able to perform qualified functions in industrial companies in the most diverse sectors, in service companies or in public bodies, such as consultancy and audit firms, automobile industry, textiles, ceramics and glass, electronics and telecommunications, banks, insurance, mould companies, plastics, industrial metals and metal engineering, footwear industry, fittings and furnishing, furniture, wood and cement industries, accounting and management offices, food and beverage companies, energy, refrigeration industry, civil construction, real estate and chemicals.
We believe that the possibility to do an internship or a project in a business environment, or even a dissertation, in the final year of the integrated master's Program, will foster students transition to the labour market and will facilitate the development of more practical work inspired in real problems from the host companies, thus bringing together the development of scientific knowledge with the complex reality of the workplace.
