Introduction
Teaching is organized into modules combining lectures, seminars, and laboratory work in the recently renovated laboratory of Polymer Physics and Technology, which is equipped with state-of-the-art devices. The program also emphasizes the basic practical knowledge of CAD-engineering programs and CAM-manufacturing technologies as they are extremely important in every industrial sector all over the world. The curriculum gives students the unique opportunity to implement their individual research projects in collaboration with various companies.
Why Study Wood, Plastic and Textile Technology at Taltech?
Lecturers from foreign universities and private sector practitioners involved in teaching bring new directions related to the development of science and technology to students. We visit successful Estonian manufacturing companies, during which the students get a very good overview of the existing technological level and future jobs. Several cooperation projects are also carried out with companies, which give our students work experience and direct contact with potential employers.
At the master's level of the Technology of Wood, Plastics and Textiles curriculum, it is possible to specialize in Wood Technology or Plastic and Textile Technology. Both directions have a solid industrial and technological foundation because the sub-branches of the textile and clothing, rubber and plastic, and wood and furniture industries account for 35% of the sales volume of Estonia's manufacturing industry. High demand for specialists with specialized knowledge has resulted from companies investing in production expansion, technology development, and efficiency improvements as a result of the increase in export volumes.
You will learn in-depth information about the construction, properties, and technologies of wood, plastic, and textile industry materials, depending on the direction you choose. You will acquire basic knowledge of technology entrepreneurship, project planning, analysis, and management, which you can supplement with optional subjects. Material testing methods, industry-specific (wood or textile) CAD/CAM technologies, and product modeling and production digitalization are related to product development and innovative production.
We are not limited to only theoretical knowledge - in teaching there is a great emphasis on practical laboratory work, solving tasks, and carrying out projects. E-learning enables the flexible acquisition of knowledge in all courses.
Teaching takes place in English. It is an international study program in which studying is free for citizens of Estonia and other European Union countries.

Program Outcome
Aims and Objectives
- The program aims to ensure competence in wood, plastics, textile, and garment production technologies, relevant scientific research and development activities, and solving industrial problems in the company
- The two main specializations (wood technology, technology of plastics and textiles) of the study program is based on combining the profound theoretical courses with practically relevant problem-based learning in technology courses and research projects that provide a smooth transition from university studies to a professional career
- The program has been composed to prepare MSc-level specialists who are able to take up high-level manager, chief engineer, and technologist positions in many areas of international wood, plastics, textiles, and other materials processing companies or start their career in furniture, upholstery furniture or apparel industry or continue their studies at the Ph.D. level.
Learning Outcomes
A graduate:
- Knows the materials used in wood, furniture, plastics, textiles, apparel industry, and their usage in production processes
- Analyses, correlates and is able to use acquired broad-based knowledge (terms, study methods, test standards, technologies, processes, and management) in the field of wood, plastics, and textile technology
- Has a systematic overview of broad-based knowledge on chosen specialty in general and specifically on chosen specialization (concepts, technologies, materials, research methods)
- Knows current trends and actual problems of his/her specialty and has a general idea of the state of the art, as of the industry related to his/her specialty, both in Estonia and other countries
- Is able to work in a team and organize production
- Is able to choose and apply appropriate methods and technologies for solving specialty-specific problems, as well as estimating the possible consequences of solutions
- Knows basics of innovation, production, design, technology, and project management knowledge in research work and in the company
- Knows the main technological processes related to his/her specialty and possibilities of sustainable development of these.
Graduates of this programme will be awarded a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc).
Scholarships and Funding
Students can apply for performance scholarships. The amount of the scholarship is 100 € (euros) per month. First-year students can apply from the second semester. For more information, please contact the university.
Career Opportunities
Growing export volumes have made manufacturing companies invest in new technologies (automation, digitalization, etc.) and increase production capacities. As a result, there is a high demand for designers, technologists, production experts, and managers with specialized knowledge across all industries.
You can start your career as an engineer, constructor, technology specialist, or project manager at companies operating in the field, which are primarily export-oriented businesses with international teams. After acquiring the necessary work experience, a logical continuation is, for example, the position of a department manager (sales, purchasing, product development, production, and quality manager).
The business processes of the materials processing industry are similar, and therefore the opportunities to move from one industry sector to another (e.g. from the wood sector to the upholstery sector) are very good and this gives better application opportunities in the work market. After earning a master's degree, you can also pursue a career in academia or continue your education by enrolling in doctoral studies.
