Introduction
A Master of Science in Marine Engineering knows the different sectors of the maritime industry and demonstrates diverse engineering competence. As a graduate, he or she is an expert in designing and building ships or other marine structures. In the constantly developing maritime industry, the graduate of the MSc program in Marine Engineering is able to respond to the challenges of the green transition: developing marine structures from sustainable materials, refitting vessels for their transfer to climate-neutral fuels, or constructing of floating offshore wind turbines.
Courses take place in two autumn semesters (Sep – Jan) at TalTech Kuressaare College and in the first spring semester (Feb – June) at TalTech main campus in Tallinn. The spring semester of the second academic year is intended for the completion of the master's thesis, and the actual location largely depends on the topic of the thesis. The thesis will be defended in Kuressaare.
Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
Students can apply for performance scholarships. The amount of the scholarship is 100 € (euros) per month. First-year students can apply from the second semester. For more information, please contact the university.
Curriculum
In the master's program in Marine Engineering, you will gain in-depth knowledge of the design, construction, and materials of floating structures. The master’s program focuses on the construction of new small craft and other marine structures as well as on the retrofit of ships.
In general and basic studies, students get a complete picture of the current state of the marine engineering sector and development trends. In the Special Studies module, a student can choose elective courses in three different areas:
- Complex marine structures
- Stability and hydrodynamics of ships
- Electrical engineering and mechatronics
Students can also choose internships and additional subject courses in the field of electronics and smart systems.
The Blue Economy Development and Competence Centre of TalTech Kuressaare College has several focus areas, to which the master's program is directly or indirectly related: marine technology, hydrodynamics and structures, and smart sea/smart technology.
Program Outcome
The MSc Program Aims to
- Train specialists in marine technology who have extensive knowledge, are qualified to apply the know-how and expertise obtained for solving field-specific problems, participate in working out innovative solutions, and are prepared to work in the international marine technology industry or in companies providing engineering solutions
- Prepare competent and motivated professionals who are able to effectively apply the acquired knowledge in research and development and are qualified to continue their studies at the Ph.D. level.
The Graduate of the Master’s Program
- Has a comprehensive and systematic overview of the principles of shipbuilding, of specific characteristics and regulations of the maritime domain
- Applies the extensive knowledge acquired for analyzing and solving professional marine technology or research-related problems
- Applies interdisciplinary methods and suitable techniques and technologies for analyzing, assessing, and solving problems in their professional field, is able to assess possible consequences of the solutions being offered
- Considering the specifics of the field, analyses prospective national and global development trends and topical environmental, production, and management issues
- Uses modern simulation and modeling techniques, applies IT tools for solving complex engineering tasks and practical problems
- Knows the properties of and is able to choose between different materials according to their intended purpose of application
- Evaluates and considers the use of different production technologies and processes for the creation of marine technology components, knows the principles of production planning and organisation
- Designs business models taking into account the product/service value proposition to the customer, the supply and demand, competition, resources, market situation, and other factors
- Has teamwork experience in achieving the objectives pursued.
