Introduction
Collaborating to plan and design efficient solutions for a resilient and sustainable future
Graduates of the Master's Programme in Civil Engineering make a lasting impact on the world as they launch careers in which they design and apply innovative solutions that foster the sustainability of buildings and transport systems.
Civil engineering specialist's career paths
Expertise in civil engineering is crucial for developing the safety, security, and environmental, social, and economic sustainability of our society. A master’s degree in civil engineering offers you a way to develop multidisciplinary expertise related to the built environment and sustainability. A career in civil engineering requires a broad understanding of phenomena related to the development of the built environment, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to develop, implement, and apply new technologies. Graduates with a master’s degree in civil engineering have a broad range of career opportunities, pursuing expert or executive-level careers in Finland or abroad. Potential employers include consulting companies, construction companies, the transport and logistics industry, public organizations at international, national, regional, and municipality levels, universities, and research institutes. You will earn a master’s degree in civil engineering by completing a two-year master’s program. At Tampere University, you have the opportunity to major in structural engineering or sustainable transport.
Studies
The mobility of people and goods is crucial for our everyday lives, businesses, and societies. However, the transport sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in many countries, while road traffic crashes are among the leading causes of death globally, and inequality of mobility affects people in developing and developed countries alike. Because of these issues, the principles of conventional car-centered transport planning are being questioned, and the need for a sustainable transport paradigm is highlighted. How can we reach a transport system that has minimum environmental stress, is safe, and offers equal possibilities for well-being? Tools to answer these questions are provided in the Sustainable Transport major.
Specialization
When applying to the Master's Programme in Civil Engineering, you may choose from the following options: Sustainable Transport, and Structural Engineering.

Curriculum
Study contents
During your studies, you will be interacting with staff and students, discussing paradigms and theoretical viewpoints, implementing your knowledge, and planning principles in small student teams on real-life case assignments, and reflecting on your development of expertise in individual and group exercises, learning diaries, and exams.
As a result of the studies in sustainable transport, you can analyze, plan, and develop transport systems that serve passenger and freight transport in urban and rural areas. You will gain knowledge of the transport needs of people and the solutions to meet those needs in a sustainable way considering ecological, economic, and social perspectives. You will be able to understand and apply transport and mobility principles as they relate to sustainable development, analyze their complex interrelations within the transport systems, as well as critically evaluate sustainable development projects and case studies in their global context, and formulate the best practices in a local context. Finland is at the forefront of developing sustainable transport, including electric vehicle charging systems, intelligent transport systems, mobility as a service (MaaS), and renewable fuels. Tampere is an active city in developing and testing innovations for sustainable transport, including the new tram system, automated vehicle pilots, and various companies focused on developing the utilization of transport data. Tampere University and its Transport Research Centre Verne are dedicated to creating globally applicable and ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable solutions for cities – with the growing city of Tampere as our living lab.

Career Opportunities
After completing the Master of Science (Technology) in Civil Engineering (Sustainable Transport), you will be equipped to be a leader for sustainable change. This can be done in local and international positions within the public, private, or academic sectors. Key employers are design and planning offices, state, city, and municipality organizations, transport and logistics companies, construction companies, as well as universities and research institutes. Tasks may include analyzing and planning transport systems at various geographical levels, developing public transport systems, designing cycling infrastructure, or developing transport decarbonization and safety strategies. All this is likely to happen by utilizing transport data, through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of experts, and participation with citizens and stakeholder organizations.
Co-operation with other parties
In addition to studies in one’s program, students may take full advantage of the teaching offered by the Tampere higher education community ranging from technical to vocational studies in various fields.
Internationalization
The studies included in the English-taught degree programs at Tampere University are international by nature, as the student groups consist of students from all over the world. Tampere University also offers plenty of other opportunities for internationalization, such as international student tutoring, student exchange, and/or internships abroad. International collaboration can also happen virtually, for example through virtual exchange and challenge-based learning courses provided by the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), a network of 13 universities across Europe.
Futhuer study opportunities
The master’s degree in civil engineering confers eligibility to apply for admission to doctoral studies. Master of Science (Technology) graduates may seek admission to the Doctoral Programme in the Built Environment that leads to the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology.
