Power electronics and electromechanics have a major role in society – now and in the future
Power electronics are used for processing voltages and currents when converting electrical energy from one form into another. Power-electronic devices can be found in almost every electric device from household applications to transportation, and industry, as well as electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. It has been estimated that in the near future, 80 % of all the generated electrical energy will pass through a power electronic converter.
Electromechanics refers to the process of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. Nearly all electrical energy is produced by rotating electrical generators and roughly half of this energy is converted back to mechanical energy with electrical motors driven by power-electronic converters. The trend of transportation electrification will further increase the need for electrical motor drives. Together, power electronics and electromechanics are the key technologies for enabling the energy transition in transportation and renewable electricity generation.

Curriculum
Study contents
The studies in Power Electronics and Electromechanics provide a skillset within the context of the subjects in question. The main focus is on modeling, control, and applications of power electronics and electrical machines. The offered courses deal with state-of-the-art as well as cutting-edge technologies that relate to the aforementioned topics and find applications in renewable energy sources, smart grids, and variable speed drives, to name a few. To facilitate and enhance understanding, most courses are complemented by hands-on activities, either in the form of computer simulations or laboratory experiments.
We offer our students the opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. The students have the option to build a strong background in power electronics and/or electromechanics by focusing exclusively on their major studies. Nevertheless, there is the option to enrich their background by choosing from a rich variety of minor studies and supplementary courses. Hence, thanks to the flexibility in the curriculum and variety of courses, the enrolled students will be able to choose their main topic of study, namely power electronics or electromechanics, while following a path tailored to their main interests.
Structure of studies
The program is comprised of 120 ECTS. Courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a master's thesis. Each ECTS is equal to an average workload of 27 hours, including lectures, exercises, assignments, independent study, and an examination. The duration of the program is two years. Students spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the final project (master's thesis). They start their studies in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.
