Software, Web & Cloud (MSc) provides students with a solid understanding of computer science and software engineering. This includes the ability to design and implement large software systems and the competence to manage and improve software development processes. The knowledge and skills in the web and cloud are emphasized as a platform for software like big-data-driven applications. Moreover, you can choose courses based on your interests from a wide range of topics such as business, information security, user experience, big data and IoT.

Study contents
Software, Web & Cloud is designed for applicants with a background in computer science or software engineering who are looking to expand their knowledge and skills in the development of high-quality software. Software, Web & Cloud draws on both academic and industry perspectives and covers the full lifecycle of software development.
The studies are anchored in real-world problems and explore subjects such as requirements management, software modeling and specification, implementation and testing software, software project management, and the web and cloud.
We offer our students the opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. A rich variety of minor subject studies is available. In fact, each degree is a unique combination of studies that the individual student has found most interesting.
Structure of studies
Master’s degree comprises 120 ECTS credits. Each ECTS credit is about 27 hours of student work. Depending on the specialization, courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a Master's thesis. The duration of the program is two years. Students usually spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the Master's thesis. The studies start in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.
Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences consists of seven specializations, leading either to a Master of Science, or Master of Science in Technology degree:
- Data Science (MSc)
- Human-Technology Interaction (MSc)
- Human-Technology Interaction (MSc Tech)
- Signal Processing and Machine Learning (MSc Tech)
- Software, Web & Cloud (MSc)
- Software, Web & Cloud (MSc Tech)
- Statistical Data Analytics (MSc).
The structure of studies in Software, Web & Cloud is available in the curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences 2022-2023 (please note that this is the public view, students have access to more information via an electronic tool).
Students admitted to a Master’s Programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. The complementary studies will be decided at the faculty case by case (maximum 60 ECTS credits). The list of possible complementary studies is given in the curriculum under the section Prerequisities
Program Outcome
Applicants can apply to take a Master of Science degree or a Master of Science (Tech) degree in Software, Web & Cloud. Please check carefully the eligibility criteria of the specialization you are interested in.
Upon completion of the studies, you will have an in-depth understanding of software engineering and the ability to design and implement high-quality software systems. You will also have the knowledge and skills to manage and improve demanding and comprehensive software development processes and understand, design, and implement web and cloud-based systems.
Scholarships and Funding
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships awarded at admission cover 100% of the tuition fees for the program duration. The program duration is
- three years for Bachelor’s degrees
- two years for Master’s degrees
- five years if the study right is granted for both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree.
Finland Scholarship
Finland scholarships awarded by Tampere University are part of the national Finland Scholarship program. Applicants to Master's programs are eligible to apply. Finland scholarships are awarded at Tampere University to the most merited applicant in each Master's program.
Finland scholarships cover the program tuition fee for the first year of studies and include a 5000 € relocation grant, paid to the student's Finnish bank account after the student has arrived in Tampere and started studies at Tampere University.
In addition, Tampere University awards a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship for the second year of studies to all recipients of the Finland scholarship. The scholarship covers 100 % of tuition fees in the second year of studies.
Early bird offer
In addition to scholarships, an early bird offer is available at admission to all fee-paying students, excluding students who have been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship or a Finland scholarship at admission. The early bird offer gives a 50 % reduction on the program tuition fee during the first year of studies.
Students may take advantage of the early bird offer by accepting the offered study place and paying 50% of the first-year tuition fee within two weeks after receiving information on admission.
This offer is valid only for the first year of studies. During consecutive years of study, all fee-paying students are eligible to apply for Tampere University Scholarships awarded during studies.

Career Opportunities
There is a lack of software professionals in Finland and abroad, and almost 90% of students pursuing software-related majors at Tampere University are employed on the day they graduate. A typical career in a company starts with working as a programmer and then advancing toward expert and/or managerial positions. Our graduates find employment also in commercial and administrative tasks relating to the field, without excluding work as a researcher or a teacher.
Following the successful completion of the program, our graduates will be eligible to apply for admission to doctoral programs in Finland or abroad.
Co-operation with other parties
In addition to studies in one’s own Master’s Programme, students may take full advantage of the teaching offered by the Tampere higher education community ranging from technical to vocational studies in various fields.
Future study opportunities
This master's degree provides the required background if you wish to pursue doctoral studies, available at Tampere University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral studies.
