Introduction
Why the Master’s in Electrical Engineering (Adaptronics) at RTU?
Lead the Charge
For electrical engineering, the beginning of the third millennium has brought not only rapid growth but constantly rising demands for innovative and modern structural systems, as conventional mechatronic approaches increasingly reach their technical and economic feasibility limits.
Enter Adaptronics
Intelligent adaptive adaptronics is an engineering and multi-disciplinary innovative technology that brings together and integrates new fundamental knowledge of structural mechatronics, generative integronics, materials science and engineering, architecture of actuators and sensors, as well as measurement and automatic control technology, and software engineering.
The discipline aims to create a new class of intelligent structures or systems that adapt automatically to different operating conditions using self-regulating mechanisms.

Curriculum
Students in the RTU master’s in electrical engineering (Adaptronics) program develop expertise in digital electronics, microprocessors, and computer control, complemented by management and communication skills presented by these emerging technologies.
Through an extensive curriculum of lectures, practical classes, laboratory works, and projects, students obtain the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to put them at the forefront of this cutting-edge, advanced science that facilitates high-performance mechatronics, integrons, and high-tech systems.
The coursework also provides flexibility in thinking and action with the inclusion of courses in economics, sociology, and pedagogics—producing well-rounded graduates prepared for a successful engineering career or to continue their studies at the Ph.D. level.
The program provides students with a broad knowledge and in-depth understanding of all facets of Environmental Engineering, including:
- Adaptive Systems in Biology
- Adaptive Systems in Industrial Electronics
- Elements of Adaptive Systems
- Adaptive Control of Cyber-Physical Systems
- Autonomous Robotic System (course project)
- Project Management and Risk Management
Duration: 1-2 years (full-time)
The master’s program covers all aspects of railway engineering and rail transport; thereby preparing specialists in railway engineering at an internationally recognized level.
Program graduates acquire the skills necessary to effectively plan and manage the introduction of innovative management systems, promote transport integration and EU railway integration processes, and evaluate the diverse perspectives of railway transport system development.
The only institution in Latvia offering this academic opportunity, #RailRTU graduates also become lifelong learners and multidisciplinary team players who can work with people from all walks of life and possess creativity while adjusting well to the everchanging atmosphere of the industry, vis a vis the socioeconomic and political climates, thus becoming valuable human resources for sustainable development in the railway industry.
The first year of graduate study includes coursework in the theoretical basis of the railway sector, widely used computer software and its mathematical grounds, as well as compulsory study courses, pedagogy, and psychology, as well as free-choice study courses. The second year of study is dedicated to an internship and the development of a master’s thesis.
Students are provided with a broad knowledge and in-depth understanding of all facets of Railway Engineering, including:
- Railway Enterprise Organization and Management
- Rolling Stock Structure and Traction
- Railway Stations, Hubs, and Train Traffic Organization
- Digitalized Optimization Methods of Transport Logistics
- Railway Commercial Activity Organization
- Rolling Algorithmization and Optimization Methods in Transport Tasks
Career Opportunities
The emerging engineering fields of mechatronics, adaptive materials, and smart structures have captured the attention of many engineering professionals, academics, and government officials in recent years. For example, the technologies are being transitioned from aerospace and military applications to the wider areas of civil, mechanical, automotive, and electrical engineering applications.
And with the world changing at breakneck speed, breakthroughs in technology have ushered in a new era where electrical engineers are in high demand. Electrical Engineering serves as the foundation for a digital revolution that’s just around the corner.
Overall employment of electrical and electronics engineers is projected to grow 3 percent from 2021 to 2031.
RTU graduates can be employed as highly qualified specialists in tech-strategic industries such as mechatronics, aerospace, automotive, medical technology, intelligent measurement engineering, and process engineering. The recent boom in demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and global focus on promoting renewable energy is also expected to augment the demand for electrical engineering degree holders.
Through completion of this degree, RTU students are prepared for careers in various sectors of the railroad industry including freight, passenger, and transit. While the primary focus of the program is civil infrastructure and theoretical sector training, students also gain professional specialization and hands-on education that will make them highly marketable for a career in any area of railroad engineering, including:
- Railroad track design and maintenance
- Civil infrastructure design and maintenance
- Railway construction management
- Project Management
- Railcar and locomotive design and maintenance
- Railway signaling
- Corporate Strategy
- Railroad transportation logistics
- Network planning and operations
