Introduction

The creation of the National University of Southern Patagonia was an aspiration for several decades, in this regard we can mention the decree of Governor Gregores who in the middle of this century proposed the creation of University Centers with technological orientation.

In 1962, the first Center for Higher Studies attached to the National University of the South was constituted, which became the first institutional antecedent of higher-level university education in the region.

This center, which later gave rise to the Santa Cruz University Institute, together with a series of non-university Tertiary Studies Centers constituted the basis for the creation of the Federal University of Southern Patagonia, which since 1991 has operated under the regime of provincial universities. The effective transfer to national jurisdiction was made in January 1996.

The pre-existing institutions to the University proposed in 1987 to organize Higher Education in Southern Patagonia. This regional vocation allowed the newly created Province of Tierra del Fuego to formalize its participation in the project in 1989, through a Treaty signed by the Governors of the provinces, with the perspective that the Academic Units would function in four Santacruceñas localities and in Land of Fire.

This long process of continuous growth was the product of the support and constant encouragement of the communities in the south of the continent as well as the efforts of teachers, students, and technical and administrative personnel, which have allowed the development, growth, and normalization of the National University of Southern Patagonia.

The main objective of the National University of Southern Patagonia is to respond to the regional demands for higher education, not only for professional training but mainly for the production of scientific and technological knowledge.

The National University of Southern Patagonia was created by National Law No. 24,446, enacted on December 23, 1994, and promulgated on January 11, 1995.
