Introduction
In our MSc/PgDip Sport Nutrition course, you’ll examine the evidence surrounding nutrition, performance and health, and gain the nutritional and physiological skills needed to work in the rewarding field of sport and exercise nutrition.
You’ll study the theory of nutrition, physiology and sports performance. Topics range from the applied effects of manipulating macronutrients to evaluating the role of fuelling before and during exercise, recovery and body composition manipulation.
You’ll develop practical skills in our on-site laboratories and food and nutrition suite, as well as at specialist sports venues across Greater Manchester, including our Institute of Sport and Platt Lane Sports Complex.

Course information
Our course offers a dynamic blend of lectures, practical sessions and workshops, giving you the opportunity to explore areas like nutrition for athletes and body composition assessments.
You’ll delve into topics such as the principles of health promotion, the cardio-respiratory systems’ responses to exercise, and the influence of food on athletic performance.
Practical sessions are an important part of this course. You’ll hone your skills in our on-site food and nutrition suite, as well as sports facilities across Greater Manchester. On campus, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a product development kitchen equipped with carbohydrate protein studios, a bakery, and food quality testing equipment. We also have several state-of-the-art performance laboratories where you’ll engage with body composition analysis and other performance-related assessments.
Year 1
During your course you’ll study core modules, covering areas including innovations in technology and fundamentals of programming, as well as an in-depth consultancy-based dissertation.
During the year, you’ll also have a chance to apply your learning in practice by joining our Postgraduate Internship Programme.

Career Opportunities
Career prospects
As a sport and performance nutritionist, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with athletes, whether it’s ballet dancers, elite runners or professional footballers, helping them to optimise their nutrition for peak performance and recovery. Alternatively, you could choose to work in product development for leading sports nutrition brands, share your expertise with the world as a media consultant, or even take on an important role in public health or the community, working with government bodies to make a lasting difference at a population level.
Our graduates have successfully secured roles within sporting bodies and organisations, local authorities, multinational food companies and private healthcare organisations.
