Introduction
Good journalism is essential to a functioning society. This course is designed to give you all the valuable skills and knowledge needed to work in the diverse and fast-moving environment that is modern journalism and media.
Our core units will give you a solid foundation in the principles and practice of good journalism, and you’ll learn how to cover stories for print, web, TV and radio, and how to adapt a story from one medium to another.
You’ll also have the option to graduate with a specialisation in broadcast journalism if you choose to take the relevant broadcast journalism option units and produce a final project in broadcast journalism.
You’ll be taught by accomplished media professionals with backgrounds and connections in BBC TV and radio; local, regional and national newspapers; and online news, so you can be sure you’re learning at the forefront of industry thinking and practice. And you’ll have the chance to develop your own industry connections through our placement opportunities, introducing you to the real working environment and enhancing your employability.
Designed to meet the requirements of media employers in the UK and beyond, you’ll amass a full and varied portfolio to present to potential employers on graduation; equipped to take on a leading role in a rapidly evolving global industry, with the confidence and knowledge to explore the potential of multi-platform news and features publishing.

Course information
Learning takes place in the vibrant and innovative environment of our Grosvenor East building, which gives our multimedia journalism students a state-of-the-art new home. You’ll benefit from a range of high-spec facilities and spaces in the new building, including in-house TV and radio studios, dedicated edit suites, and a generous atrium and foyer space for exhibitions and events. You will be taught by a team of dedicated, experienced professionals from backgrounds including BBC TV and radio, local and regional newspapers, and online news sites.

Year 1
You will develop a solid foundation in the principles and practices of good journalism with our core units, learning how to cover stories across multiple platforms. The option units listed below are likely to run, although some may not be delivered every year.

Placement options
Students are supported and encouraged to complete a period of work placement related to their projects. Tutors have a wide range of industry contacts within the North West and beyond, and will actively help you to find suitable work placements. The department has a dedicated work experience website. You will be expected to produce articles for your portfolio and the journalism department's news website, The Northern Quota.
