Introduction
Intellectual Property and New Technologies program delivers comprehensive knowledge on the legal protection and commercial exploitation of new technologies. New technologies create new opportunities in life and science and build bridges between people from different countries and cultures. They also pose serious challenges, especially for the intellectual property law. The program offers an extensive curriculum on intellectual property law related to new technologies, considered from an international perspective. It adopts a comparative approach to IP regulations, with EU law serving as a main point of reference.
The program is developed in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Its main focus is on the following issues: new technologies and patent law; copyright in the digital era; commercial communication in the context of trademarks, designs, and unfair competition; data protection, privacy, and personal rights on the Internet; Internet service providers’ liability; and more. The program takes advantage of new technologies. Its first, non-residential semester is realized online, through a state-of-the-art e-learning platform. The remaining two residential semesters, which take place in Kraków, combine traditional lectures and seminars with e-learning.
The Intellectual Property and New Technologies program is organized by the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland
Jagiellonian University is one of the oldest universities in Europe founded in 1364, and one of the best universities in Poland according to the national universities ranking, the only Polish and Eastern European higher education institution in Reuter’s Top 100: Europe’s Most Innovative Universities ranking. The Faculty of Law and Administration of Jagiellonian University conducts the most innovative and efficient educational program, confirmed by independent branch rankings for the best law faculty in Poland.
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is the global forum for intellectual property policy, services, information, and cooperation. As a specialized agency of the United Nations, WIPO assists its 191 member states in developing a balanced international IP legal framework to meet society’s evolving needs. It provides business services for obtaining IP rights in multiple countries and resolving disputes. It delivers a policy forum to shape balanced international IP rules, global services to protect IP across borders and resolve disputes, technical infrastructure to connect IP systems and share knowledge, cooperation, and capacity-building programs to enable all countries to use IP.
Patent Office of the Republic of Poland – the state administration agency, in Poland is responsible for the implementation of tasks connected with industrial property protection. The main responsibility of the Polish Patent Office is deciding on granting exclusive rights for industrial property objects. One of the basic tasks of the Polish Patent Office is keeping publicly accessible registers with information on the legal status of the protection of industrial property objects on the territory of Poland.
