The MA Program in Sociology of Contemporary Societies is a two-year English-language Master’s program designed for students interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of the state of the present-day field of sociology and social anthropology, including their theory and research methods. It features a strong core of sociology and social anthropological courses in four specializations:

- Anthropology of Space and Mobility;
- Identities, Health, and Bodies;
- Double degree in Sociology of Contemporary Societies with the University of Florence.
The Civil Society and Politics specialization provide students with a deep understanding of how contemporary complex societies work. Students acquire theoretical and practical skills in political sociology, anthropology of nationalism, and the non-profit sector. They will learn to analyze various aspects of public life systematically. The Anthropology of Space and Mobility specialization brings in-depth knowledge of the globalized world, its dynamics, migratory movements, social mobility, and enables these phenomena to be deeply understood, and applied in the field of urban planning, migratory politics, and analyzing global developments. The Identities, Health, and Bodies specialization develop the profound knowledge and practical skills required to conduct sociological and social anthropological research in the field of medical anthropology, health sociology, lifestyle studies, sociology of sport, and gender studies. There is also the option of the double degree in Sociology of Contemporary Societies with the University of Florence, which provides students with in-depth knowledge of social theory, anthropology of the European Union, global and European citizenship, urban life analysis, population society and family studies, and issues of emotions and social change.
In all specializations, students can choose either to focus on quantitative or qualitative research methodology. All specializations provide prerequisites for their graduates to be employed in the education sector, state and public administration, the non-profit sector, and corporate organizations. In addition to preparing for an out-of-academic deployment, this study creates the preconditions for an academic career and postgraduate studies.

Curriculum
Study Program
The study program Sociology in European Context is designed for Czech and international students interested in present-day sociological knowledge covering both theories and research methods. The curriculum in English focuses on major social processes taking place in contemporary European countries and offers opportunities for students to develop their skills of carrying out the sociological and social anthropological research of these processes including the data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
The lectures and seminars examine processes and phenomena of international migration, nationalism, and social inequalities in terms of societal integration and the main threats of civil society building. Further, students explore the role of elites in the societies undergoing social transformation and on the civil society building. There are additional lectures and seminars on ethnography and applied research (electoral, marketing, etc.). Attention is also paid to learning reflexive thinking of the scientific practice.
The advantage of the curriculum is that provides students with a useful combination of theoretical and practical knowledge of modern European societies and methods of their research that gives them an excellent foundation either for a fruitful career in the public sector, non-profit organizations, or private companies but also for subsequent doctoral study in social sciences.
Career Opportunities
Students graduating from the program will possess scholarly advantages including current knowledge of the major social problems facing present-day societies. With their understanding of both quantitative and qualitative sociological research methods, graduates can competently conduct sociological and social anthropological research and cooperate effectively on both analytic and problem-solving tasks, allowing them to work as researchers, experts, analysts, or project managers in either the public sector and non-profit organizations, or in private companies. Our graduates are equally prepared to pursue a fruitful academic career and Ph.D. studies.
