Introduction

The MA in Sound Arts and Industries program is committed to helping you turn the skills you develop into tools you can use to advance your career. We are excited about the opportunity to play a role in your career development.

EPICS

The Office of External Programs, Internships, & Career Services (EPICS) empowers students to develop their career strategies and engage in the global marketplace. Housed within the School of Communication (SoC) at Northwestern University, EPICS is here to support you with your career development throughout your time as a student.

The MA in Sound Arts and Industries program has a dedicated EPICS Liaison whose role is to develop events and services specific to this program. They include:

Career Coaching

Sound MA students have access to 1:1 career coaching through EPICS. Coaching appointment topics include resume development, cover letter reviews, internship and job search strategy, interviewing, networking, or any other topic related to career development.

Speaker Series

For the Sound MA Speaker Series, we bring distinguished alumni and professionals from various industries to campus to talk about their careers and current trends in their area of expertise. The Sound MA Speaker Series is open to all Northwestern students.

Masterclasses

Throughout the year we welcome industry professionals to lead a masterclass on sound-related topics. In the past, we’ve had masterclasses on sonic branding, circuit-bending and music production, and voiceover.

Career Development Workshops

Career development workshops are offered quarterly and focus on both general and industry-specific career skills including resume and cover letters, professional writing, networking in person and online, building a professional website, documenting sound projects, developing your personal value proposition, internship, and job search strategy development, and interviewing.

Internships

An important component of the Sound MA program is the experiential learning requirement. Students in the program must complete a minimum of 160 experiential learning hours during the summer quarter of the program via an internship or thesis while enrolled in an online career development course.
