Introduction
The program provides a systematic introduction to theories, methods, and research skills (including source language training) in a variety of historical disciplines. The program’s location in Vienna and its international faculty provide students with an inspiring setting to study historical change in action and conduct their research on a topic of their choice. Successful graduates will write and defend a thesis of original research based on methodologically rigorous employment of primary sources.
This MA is tailored to students who seek to broaden their knowledge before focusing on a specific thesis topic. The program offers two tracks. Students can apply to:
History Track
The History track is characterized by breadth and variety. Students can choose courses from across the entire curriculum of the Department, exploring the past from antiquity to the present, while developing their field of interest towards the completion of a project of original research. This degree includes an emphasis on language learning, methodological training, and practical skills.
Late Antique and Medieval Track
Geared toward applicants from non-specialized academic backgrounds, this track offers a comprehensive foundation in late antique and medieval studies, defined broadly geographically and chronologically. Students gain expertise across different disciplines and can choose from a range of courses that encompass politics, economics, society, culture, archaeology, philosophy, and art history.
Just like the one-year MA, this program is an excellent preparation for future doctoral studies and offers crucial skills in source languages, digital humanities, publishing, etc.
