Program Description

Given technology’s increasing influence and increasing demands, the informed use of technology is a must to create rich learning environments in K12, higher education, business and industry, and consulting. Educational Technology is an innovative way to design, deliver, facilitate, and manage chosen professional settings for learners of all ages, whether it is face-to-face, online, or both.

Educational Technology Master’s Program at Bahçeşehir University will teach you to integrate theory, research, creativity, and problem-solving skills with a variety of emerging technologies in order to improve performance in diverse contexts including educational institutions and corporate training classrooms.

The program aims a broad and deep understanding of the practice of instructional design, visual design, media design, interaction design, multimedia development, evaluation, and research. Our graduates go on to take positions as technology coordinators or administrators, teacher leaders, instructional designers or technologists and curriculum integration specialists in this field.

Educational Technology - Program Structure

The Master of Science in Educational Technology has a thesis and a thesis alternative. The non-thesis program consists of 10 courses and 1 project course. Thesis program consists of 7 courses, seminars and thesis studies. Elective courses offer options for students to specialize in areas suitable for career planning in accordance with their desires.

Each must course is only opened during the period. Elective courses vary according to semesters. Online elective course options are available on a semester basis.

The duration of the Master's Program in Educational Technology non-thesis is 3 semesters. The duration of the thesis program is between 4 and 6 semesters. Students who have not completed the program within the specified time will be dismissed from the University.

Courses are typically delivered between 19:00 and 22:00 on weekdays at Beşiktaş Campus. There are weekly courses as many as the number of courses selected as of the semester.

Educational Technology - Course Description

EDT5001 Educational Technology, Field, Theory, and Profession

This course introduces students of Educational Technology to the field. It is the fundamental course in instructional technology. The course tries to cover most of the topics in the field. It tries to introduce the field with the history and the course will also cover the current trends and what future will bring to the field of educational technology

EDT5002 Research Methods in Education

Research techniques in instructional technologies; research problems; ethics and research; variables and hypotheses; literature review; sampling; data collection and instruments; validity and reliability; preparing a research proposal.

EDT5003 Instructional Design

Systematic approach and modeling; instructional design models; needs and problem analysis; instructional and performance environment (learner, content, and organization) analysis; subject-content and task analysis; determining prior knowledge and conditions; stating instructional goal; writing learning objectives; determining the criteria for measurement and evaluation; instructional theories and strategies; developing instructional materials; instructional system design.

EDT5004 Multimedia Design and Production in Education

Learning theories (Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism) applied to multimedia design and development; introduction and use of multimedia development tools; instructional design for multimedia; evaluation of multimedia products; design and development of audio and visual materials (animation, audio, video and etc.); principles for interface design (use of animation, interaction, feedback, navigation, packaging, and publishing).

EDT5005 Distance Education: Theory, Research, and Practice

Introduction to distance education; instructional environments in distance education; distance education technologies; techniques and methods used in planning, preparation and application of distance education technologies; main concepts in Internet use; Internet use in education; Internet ethics (netiquette); learning objects; international standards for learning objects meta-data.

EDT5008 Advanced Instructional Design

Design, develop, manage, and evaluate instructional programs; acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide leadership in the area of instructional design; survey different instructional models and their associated methods including rapid prototyping, to understand each model's relative strengths and call upon it when and where appropriate situations arise.

EDT5009 Human Performance Technology

The students examine fundamental components that increase the performance in the learning situations or in the workplace, process models, solutions, practice issues, and future trends in the field of human performance technology.

EDT5010 Adult Education and Information Technology

Adult psychology; adult learning; adults' attitudes towards change; their resistance to change; principles for adult education; information technology for adults; plan, design and execute IT-related training programs.

EDT5011 Internet-Based Programming

Programming languages for Internet; introduction to the Internet programming client-server architecture; Web server setup according to the programming languages (asp, php,. net, jsp, etc.); editors and authors for Internet programming and development; functions in Internet programming; server and environment variables; cookies in Internet programming; the HTTP requests and responses sent over the Internet; managing the database through the Internet; developing a dynamic web applications for educational purposes.

EDT5012 Statistical Data Analysis

Basic statistical concepts and methods; (using statistical software) coding and inputting data; creating tables and their interpretations; descriptive statistics and charts; inferential statistics; non-parametric statistics.

EDT5013 Online Collaborative Learning

Theoretical foundations of collaborative learning and online collaborative learning; online learning processes, design, problems, and applications; online collaborative learning tools (electronic mail, intranets, portals, online communities, Weblogs, dashboards, conferences, forums, meeting rooms, learning management, flowchart and information management).

EDT5014 Game-Based Learning

Theoretical foundations of game-based learning; learning process in game-based learning environments; the role of digital media; games as the nature of social learning; the effects of games in learning environments; the role of motivational theories associated with games and players’ styles; the motivational and learning factors of existing games.

EDT5015 Technology Management in Organizations

Technology and technology management concepts; technology life cycle; the critical factors in managing technology; business and technology strategy; competitiveness; technology planning and technology transfer; technology acquisition and use; technological innovation process.

EDT5016 Graphic Design

Graphic design process and principles; creativity in graphic design; the basic design elements; application areas of graphic design (typographic communications, graphic symbols - emblem, landmark signs, logos and trademarks, visual identity design, poster design); basic graphics knowledge (pixel depth, compression, image format selection, resolution); graphic design software (Photoshop, Fireworks, etc.); animation; animation principles in education; and developing simple animation by using Adobe Flash.

EDT5017 Educational Video

The entire process of developing instructional video, from concept to finished project; tasks (message definition, scriptwriting, storyboarding, production, post-production editing, and evaluation); the operation of digital video cameras; production personnel; medium requirements; lighting; sound; and digital editing software package.

EDT5019 ICT in Education

EDT 5019, ICT in Education is a graduate-level course that covers the theories, frameworks, and practices of computer- and web-based applications in various instructional settings, paradigms, theories, and research regarding the use of technologies in teaching. Throughout the course, we will explore miscellaneous technology options and their implementation in teaching and learning. The first weeks of the course will prepare you with the foundational information in the area of Computer-assisted instruction, while the rest of the course will combine research and practical information in teaching different areas and skills with CAI technologies. In this course, students will also gain practical experience in pedagogical applications of computers, including using and evaluating various software, websites, and Web 2.0 tools.

EDT5887 Seminar

Presentation and discussion of the studies, developments, existing problems, and possible solutions in the field of instructional technology.

EDT5888-1 Thesis

The aim of the course is to make graduate students who will write a thesis on the research field they have determined to make a preliminary study. It aims to make the students write a proposal on the selected problem within a certain time frame. To make students identify a research topic and write a proposal on the selected field of study.
