Knowledge of energy conversion is essential for designing energy systems for a sustainable future.
Energy production is in transition. Energy consumption is increasing globally, and energy production currently causes significant environmental impacts; from greenhouse gases to particle emissions. It is clear that we need more energy and that we need clean energy. The Energy Conversion gives you a comprehensive understanding of how different energy production and conversion methods relate to each other and act as components in energy systems.
You will understand how different production/conversion methods are used and how they compare with each other in different applications. You will understand the related technical, environmental and economic aspects and how they compare in producing sustainable and feasible energy for the society.
The programme will deepen your knowledge, skills and competences in energy technology, e.g. energy economics, environmental impacts, savings and emissions, renewable energy sources, and power plant processes.
After graduating, you will be able to analyse, design and select energy conversion processes for different applications, taking technological, economic, environmental and societal aspects into account.

- apply and develop mathematical models to solve energy technology problems;

- communicate and act in academic and research environments;
- work as a specialist in energy technology.
Degree structure and studies
The Master's Programme in Energy Conversion is a two-year programme. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.
The programme includes core and specialisation studies.
Core studies (15 ECTS credits) include courses on technology and society, maintenance management, and power plant design.
Specialisation studies (minimum of 72 ECTS credits) include obligatory and alternative studies:
Obligatory specialisation studies (65 ECTS credits) include courses on steam turbines, the design of fluid machinery, the thermal design of steam boilers, advanced modelling tools for transport phenomena, advanced topics in modelling energy systems, and steam boilers.
Alternative specialisation studies (7-30 ECTS credits) include courses on bioenergy and energy use in the forest industry, turbulence models, computational fluid dynamics, energy economics, renewable energy technology and nuclear power plant engineering.
The Master's thesis, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialisation studies. The thesis is an advanced research project, which requires approximately six months of full-time work. Students complete it during their fourth semester.
Double and triple degree studies for LUT degree students
The programme also offers a possibility for double or triple degree studies. Students admitted to the double or triple degree programme receive a degree certificate from two or three universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of all universities involved.
Students admitted to complete the Master's degree in this Master's programme at LUT may apply to the double degree programme with the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnical University or the triple degree programme with the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnical University and Leibniz Universität Hannover.
Double degree studies for students from partner universities
Students from partner universities are able to study as a double degree student at LUT. Students admitted to the double degree programme receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities.

The already expansive energy sector is growing globally, but in addition, it is changing to respond to global challenges. Our graduates have the skills to not only cope with the transition but to be its drivers. There is a constant need for new experts with the latest skills and understanding of the technologies available currently and in the future.
Our graduates work in many walks of life. However, they most typically build careers in research and development, energy production and/or sales, or as sales engineers, managers, consultants, and civil servants. The global energy sector is extensive and offers plenty of opportunities to work in large companies, SMEs, governmental institutions or NGOs.
Graduates find work as specialists in, for instance, design and product development, production and operation, management, sales and marketing, research and education, and public authorities and organisations.
You will also be given a firm basis to continue your studies in doctoral programmes.
