Professional placements are a key feature of the programme and all students will showcase their work in public performances at the culmination of the course. Directing Workshop In this compulsory module students will investigate various directing processes in a workshop format. Students will work with The Lir’s Head of Directing and visiting directors, as well as professional and student actors. Students will receive both group feedback and individual tuition in the development of their craft. Workshops will cover such areas as: text and a creative world-view; developing an awareness of the professional directing context; developing an explicit, personal aesthetic; working collaboratively with actors and other artists. This module also outlines career development and provides a constructive framework for group and self critique. Theatre Production This compulsory module aims to enable students to apply the skills acquired in the other Modules to the development of their individual creative voice and practice, and in the direction of a theatre performance of between 30-60 minutes which will be showcased to the professional industry as part of The Lir’s on-going programme of public performances and events. Each student will be individually supervised in pre-production, rehearsals, tech and public performances throughout Term Three and over the summer months. Two Assistant Director placements working alongside professional theatre directors will form a key component of the preparation for the final production. Dramaturgy for Theatre Directing This elective module is taught by a professional dramaturge. Its aim is to introduce students to a range of dramatic texts for the theatre with an emphasis on the dramaturgical composition of those texts. An understanding of the contexts within which those dramaturgical strategies were produced will also be fostered. This seminar-based module requires students to examine key problems related to the creation and structure of scripts for performance. Students will consider a variety of theories regarding dramatic structure, consider the research requirements of script creation, explore different approaches to script development and learn to apply a dramaturgical vocabulary to a number of case studies. At Visual Cultural Studies you are given the opportunity to study ethnographic research methods, anthropological theory, and ethnographic film making in an international environment, culminating with the production of your very own film and written thesis. The Department of Archaeology and Social Anthropology offers a two-year full-time Master's programme in Visual Cultural Studies (VCS). The aim of this programme is to teach students how to produce knowledge about people's lives and cultures through an exploration of their everyday lives based on the use of qualitative social science research methods and ethnographic film. The programme combines lectures in academic theory and method, filmmaking and practical instruction in camerawork, sound recording and editing. The students at the Master's programme follow a set of courses the first two semesters before they travel on fieldwork. Instead, you’ll eat, sleep and breathe games with intensive tuition from industry pros, before working in teams at NTI Birmingham’s city centre media studio to create a fully working game for a series if platforms, culminating in developing a PlayStation®3 working game prototype, directly for SCEE.You’ll work full-time hours (9-5, Mon-Thu) over 12 months , with each team given a mentor from industry to set a development brief, monitor progress and sign-off the game once it’s complete.Successful students will gain an MA/MSc in Video Games Development from Birmingham City University.The course was founded by Oliver Williams (Gamer Camp Studio Director) & Guy Wilday, former Studio Director at SEGA Racing Studio (SEGA Rally) and Head of Studio at Codemasters (Colin McRae Rally). Master in Animation Estonian Academy of Arts is offering a two-year Master of Animation programme to postgraduate students interested in animation directing and filmmaking. If you are an ambitious and determined artist, with the talent, motivation and desire to create unique work, form new directions and realise your career aspirations as an animation director, this course is ideal. The course combines several disciplines e.g. animation, scriptwriting, history of animation and media theory, making the background of this MA programme trans-disciplinary. The coursework mainly concentrates on classical and experimental techniques i.e. drawing animation, stop motion, cut-outs, sand animation, painting under the camera etc. In the professional sense, students will direct and produce animated films. An important part of the study are collaboration projects with local companies and organisations. The programme has a unique teaching and learning framework where students receive abundant individual attention and mentoring from highly experienced animation professionals. Students of the animation department organise the annual festival Animated Dreams, which is part of POFF, the Dark Nights Film Festival, held in Estonia during the dim evenings of Autumn. Curriculum Structure Lectures, seminars, intensive modules and projects are intertwined in the two-year MA programme. Film and Media Studies specialisms - PhD / MPhil The MPhil/PhD in Film and Media Studies is for media graduates who are looking to develop their knowledge of a specific area of film and media studies to a high level of academic achievement. Study at MPhil/PhD level is open to honours graduates as well as those already having a postgraduate degree. The MPhil/PhD is largely non-taught and your main submission will be a thesis written under the supervision of a member of staff (the Director of Dtudies) with expertise in the area chosen. Additional support is available from other internal/external academics. Your thesis will be a piece of original critical research which makes a significant contribution to scholarly knowledge in the film and media studies field. The broad topic to be investigated will be defined by you with more specific details agreed through discussion with the Director of Studies. Careers & professional development The course is useful if you wish to follow a career path involving advanced scholarly research; for instance, an academic teaching career in the film/media field. Subject overview Staff in the School of Arts, Media and Education value their relationships with students and provide friendly and supportive postgraduate research supervision. They are able to draw upon their own experience of publishing and conference presentation in the field to enhance their support of postgraduate students. Projects recently completed by staff include the publication of a monograph applying Bakhtinian theory to some of the key concepts of film studies. Projects currently underway include Brid Andrews' study into documenting professional practice in the creative industries. During the first 12 to 18 months of the course you will be registered for an MPhil and carry out research towards this qualification. Assuming satisfactory progress as indicated by a transfer report, you will then transfer to the award of PhD. At the transfer stage you have the option of writing-up for an MPhil only if you wish. Either qualification is awarded subsequent to the production of a thesis and oral examination. At the start of the course you will be strongly encouraged to broaden your knowledge of research training by attending relevant sessions of the University’s postgraduate training programme and at relevant research seminars hosted by the school. You will be encouraged to participate in the latter and, as a PhD student, you will also be encouraged to disseminate your research more widely, at conferences and in academic journals. Supervisors can offer advice and encouragement on every stage of research dissemination, from writing proposals to delivering papers at conferences.
