The Jazz Studies concentration offers a high-level experience in a small jazz ensemble and solo performance, arranging and composition, improvisation, and instrumental/vocal performance skills. In addition, William Paterson jazz students have access to high-level, primary source studies available only in the New York area, and to current pedagogical techniques in the areas of improvisation and arranging. A deeper level of study arises from the following: added historical and theoretical background (in the Western European tradition, as well as in jazz); primary source research and graduate-level writing opportunities uniquely available in jazz; current technological innovations as they relate to jazz; and application of these issues to pedagogical techniques in higher education and/or public schools. The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree is designed as the professional degree for the fine artist, designer, and media artist. It is the mission of the program to provide the MFA candidate with a rigorous environment in which to focus on professional goals and artistic excellence. An important aspect of this environment is the creation of a community of peers and mentors all pursuing the enhancement of imagination through the creation and interpretation of meaningful work. The music management concentration provides the student with the entrepreneurial skills to be successful in the contemporary music and entertainment industry. With its connection to New York industry personnel, its objective is to offer the most current information in the classroom and through internships. The music management concentration immerses the music student in the environment of the industry while fostering a clear understanding of the role and needs of managing the artist's revenue streams. Please note that the program is designed primarily for music students who have not earned an undergraduate degree in the music business field. It is the intent of the program to provide current, advanced information on educational research, service delivery, trends, community services, societal attitudes, technical developments, and instructional strategies and practices for the education of persons with disabilities.
