University of Wroclaw - Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences
Campus Full time October 2018 Poland Wrocław

Public History

The public history program is addressed to all the BA graduates, not only in history, and even not only in the humanities, who would like to conduct the research about and promote the public uses of history. Public history has been operating since the 1970s as a subdiscipline of history, but also as a separate academic discipline. It is called the history "for the people, by the people, with the people, of the people" and deals with all the aspects of history outside the formal education (also academic education). It operates for many years at the universities world-wide and enjoys considerable popularity among the students.

The history itself concentrates on examining the past (aiming at answering the question "how was it there?") while public history conducts research on how the knowledge about the past is present in the social consciousness and how it is (and may be) instilled in this consciousness, with the central question of "what do (did/will) the people know about how it was?" It focuses on the historical memory, which is rather marginal in the "traditional" history research. The courses from the public history program concentrate on the ways of shaping the historical consciousness (or collective memory) - both in the context of its theoretical framework and mechanism (including e.g. politics of history) and in various practical ways (tools/techniques) of influencing this memory and consciousness, starting from collecting and processing the testimonies of the past, through speech-writing and preparing other texts promoting the historical... Linguistic proficiency is a key factor for smart as well as inclusive growth of the economy within Europe as specified in the Europe 2020 strategy and the Education and Training strategic framework 2020. With this in mind, we have designed an innovative and high-quality MA programme in linguistics. The programme is unrivalled in its combination of theoretical and empirical linguistics, which will provide students with cutting-edge skills and competences and enhance their career options in the world of education and training as well as in the world of work. Specifically, the proposed programme provides a thorough exposure to theoretical as well as empirical linguistics. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of linguistic theories for all levels of language, and will learn how to apply them to analyse new sets of linguistic data. They will also be instructed on how to perform empirical studies to test linguistic hypotheses, both in terms of experiments and corpus studies. Great emphasis will be put on the way in which the two research fields can mutually benefit from each other. Students will not only know linguistic theories for their own sake, they will learn how to derive from them empirical research questions that can be validated experimentally. At the same time, empirical approaches to linguistics will always be grounded in theoretical work to suggest potential topics for experiments and for the discussion and interpretation of empirically derived results. ...
