The biological sciences can be defined as the study of living things. In general, it covers how all living things from the smallest microorganisms to larger plants and animals live and interact with each other. It tends to focus on the structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution and taxonomy of living things. A study in the area of biological sciences is available in the UK at both the bachelor and master’s level. One of the beauties of pursuing this course in the UK is to develop a more specific and personalized subject focus than you would normally be able to do in Latin America. Studying your degree in the UK will also give you a valuable and unique perspective from your peers. Several of our partner universities also offer work experience with certain companies within their degrees to set you apart and help you gain more experience in your chosen field.... [-]

The MRes in Neuroscience is designed to provide advanced training in neuroscience research. Students conduct a year-long research project and learn relevant techniques and skills through course work. Research projects are carried out in a single laboratory over the full length of the programme, thereby giving students a unique opportunity to pursue research questions in depth. The overall aim is to help students acquire the skills needed to succeed as independent research scientists.

The MRes in Neuroscience is a full-time taught postgraduate programme run by the School of Psychology and Neuroscience.

Highlights The intensive week-long introductory module prepares students for the course before the start of Semester 1. The course includes a streamlined taught component. Students have the opportunity to conduct a year-long project in a single laboratory. Teaching format ... [-]

This programme is aimed at those who have secured a PhD research place in Human Geography or Sustainable Development at St Andrews and who desire or require a year of research training before progressing to their PhD.

Applicants must apply to the School of Geography and Sustainable Development to secure a PhD place in the first instance.

Those who have not secured a PhD research place may be interested in the taught MSc in Sustainable Development programme instead.

The MRes in Human Geography/Sustainable Development is a one-year, full-time taught postgraduate programme run by the School of Geography and Sustainable Development.

The programme is aimed at those looking to progress to PhD research in Sustainable Development or Human Geography within the School. The fixed programme offers a broad grounding in research design, theoretical approaches, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. Students also receive bespoke training in professional skills and research design specifically tailored to their own research interests.... [-]

Overview

These programmes enable you to conduct in-depth research into a science, technological or social science focused aspect of geography.

They are aimed at students who wish to focus primarily on achieving a research-based masters-level qualification.

With close support and guidance from subject-specialist academics, MRes students typically conduct in-depth research into a social science aspect of geography, while (Sc) MRes students focus on a scientific or technological aspect of geography. It may be possible to upgrade to a PhD at the discretion of the school.

You will benefit from being part of a world-leading, research-intensive school, spending time on a topic of your choice while enhancing your research skills and subject expertise.... [-]

Mathematics and physics are complementary subjects and make a sensible combination to study at university. There are many examples of unexpected discoveries resulting from the interaction between the two disciplines. Ideas developed in particle physics have led to advances in topology - one of the purest branches of mathematics. Advances in the understanding of chaos provide another example. Ideas from the theory are being applied increasingly in the modeling of complex physical systems such as the atmosphere and lasers.

The Warwick joint courses (BSc and MMathPhys) are now among the best-established in the country with around 50 students starting each year. The courses include a significant proportion of modules from both contributing departments designed primarily for joint degree students. It is possible at the end of the First Year to transfer to either of the single subject degrees. Years one and two are common to the two courses.... [-]

Physics aims to observe and explain the behaviour of the physical universe. In particular, physics looks for basic laws, which account for and predict what can be observed. Part of the appeal of the subject is that the physical world is governed by remarkably few such laws and that these apply everywhere and to everything.

The structure of the courses reflects the structure of the subject. All students take the core modules and choose further modules from the lists of options. The core modules introduce the fundamental principles, while the optional modules explore their applications in the different areas of physics including astrophysics, the properties of matter, particle physics and atmospheric physics. The option scheme also allows a proportion of modules to be taken from outside of physics. We encourage students not only to consider modules related to physics, for example in computing but also modules in philosophy and modern languages.... [-]
