Students from the master’s programme in Applied and Computational Mathematics will become skilled applied mathematicians, well-prepared for advanced industrial positions or continued graduate studies. The programme contains four tracks: Computational Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Optimization and Systems Theory, and Statistical Learning and Data Analytics.

Applied and Computational Mathematics at KTH

The programme consists of foundation courses that are mandatory for all students, and once the individual specialisation track is chosen, there are relevant required courses within that area as well. Regardless of which track students attend, the final term consists of a degree project that may be carried out in an academic or industrial environment in Sweden or abroad. Students are welcome to discuss project ideas with the staff at the Department of Mathematics but are also encouraged to seek other contracts, in the academic world and in industry, to identify suitable projects. The result of the degree project is provided as a written report and as a presentation at a seminar.... [-]

A functional and well-developed transport system is a prerequisite for a sustainable and prosperous society. The creation and maintenance of such a system demand knowledge of transport and geoinformation technologies, as well as an understanding of how the new technologies and policies are adopted, how they interact and how they affect our daily activities.

Transport and Geoinformation Technology at KTH

The master’s programme combines two closely related aspects of the built environment: transport systems and geoinformation technologies. The programme enables students to either specialise in one of these main subjects or develop their own interdisciplinary study plan, making use of each student’s unique background and interests. The recommended courses form a foundation for both subject areas, and students can choose a subject area by selecting the most appropriate sequence of the elective courses. Most courses combine interactive lectures with laboratory work. Many also include an in-depth term project. The courses make use of modern data collection instruments and quantitative modelling and processing software.... [-]

The joint master’s programme in Mathematics is a collaboration between KTH and Stockholm University (SU). The specialisation of study is directed towards areas corresponding to research groups at KTH and SU, taking full advantage of the broad spectrum of expertise available at both universities.

Mathematics at KTH

The courses in the programme are organised in three blocks – the basic block, the profile block and the broadening block. The basic block provides an in-depth education in Mathematics at an advanced level. Within this block, it is mandatory to take one course in each of these areas: algebra and geometry, analysis, topology, and discrete mathematics. In the profile block, courses are chosen freely to specialise and prepare for the master's thesis – the subject is regarded in a broad sense, including mathematical statistics, optimisation theory and theoretical computer science. The broadening block contains courses on theory and methodology of science, communication of mathematical subjects and a half term of freely elective courses.... [-]

The two-year master’s programme in Electromagnetics, Fusion and Space Engineering incorporates a strong foundation in electrical engineering with an understanding of electromagnetic fields and how they interact with matter.

Electromagnetics, Fusion, and Space Engineering at KTH

Electromagnetic fields are the basis of telecommunications. They are employed, for example, to transmit high-speed data through optic fibers or mobile wireless systems. Additionally, electromagnetic fields are transmitted from objects in the universe, such as stars, and they provide key information to help us understand the universe. Furthermore, a fundamental understanding of plasma is needed for controlling and generating fusion energy, the same source that powers the Sun, and which promises to power the Earth in the near future.... In many places in the world, we experience rapid environmental change. In the Master’s Program in Polar Landscape and Quaternary Climate, you get knowledge and skills necessary for the understanding and analysis of polar and alpine landscapes. You get insights into how they have changed on different time scales, linked to climate variations during the Quaternary period.

Climate change is particularly rapid in the glacial and periglacial landscapes of polar and alpine regions. The program will provide you with knowledge about the global climate system’s functioning and about methods used to reconstruct climate and environmental change. In addition, human and natural causes of climate change are presented and discussed.... [-]
