The future of the sector and its manifold applications require highly skilled experts with a broad interdisciplinary perspective. The development of innovative space technologies is fostered by an intense symbiosis between technological sectors and the challenges set by fundamental research in exact and biomedical sciences. Additionally, the economic and social valorisation of space technologies requires an efficient relationship between project developers and the economic sector. The large scale of space projects imposes important constraints on management. The international character of the space sector and of its broad applications, including the relevance of space for security and defence, implies a need for European and international legal and political measures. What is the Master of Space Studies all about? The Master of Space Studies programme is designed to prepare scientists to respond to a myriad of challenges and opportunities. In addition to coursework in space sciences, the curriculum is enriched by a Master's thesis and a series of guest lecturers from international, national and regional institutions. This is an advanced Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis. Structure The programme is conceived as an advanced master’s programme and as such it requires applicants to have successfully completed an initial master’s programme in either the humanities and social sciences, exact sciences and technology or biomedical sciences. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme is expressed by the common core of 25 ECTS in introductory coursework. These courses are mandatory for every student. They acquaint the student with the different aspects that together form the foundation of space-related activities. The backgrounds of the students in programme are diverse, but all students have the ability to transfer knowledge across disciplines. Depending on their background and interests, students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge through more domain-specific optional courses, for a total of 20 ECTS, covering the domains of (A) Space Law, Policy, Business and Management, (B) Space Sciences and (C) Space Technology and Applications, with the possibility to combine the latter two. For the master’s thesis (15 ECTS), students are embedded in a research team of one of the organising universities, or in an external institute, organisation or industrial company, in which case an academic supervisor is assigned as the coordinator of the project. The master’s thesis is the final section of the interdisciplinary programme, in which the acquired knowledge and abilities are applied to a complex and concrete project. Department The mission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy is exploring, understanding and modelling physical realities using mathematical, computational, experimental and observational techniques. Fifteen teams perform research at an international level. Publication of research results in leading journals and attracting top-level scientists are priorities for the department. New physics and innovation in the development of new techniques are important aspects of our mission. The interaction with industry (consulting, patents...) and society (science popularisation) are additional points of interest. Furthermore, the department is responsible for teaching basic physics courses in several study programmes. Is this the right programme for me? The interdisciplinary Master of Space Studies programme is open to students who have already obtained a master’s degree. The criteria for admission to the programme include the following: the candidate has obtained an initial master’s degree for which he/she can motivate the relevance for space studies. the candidate presents a 2-page essay with a consistent view of the importance of the programme for his/her professional expectations, in view of the candidate’s previous education. The candidate may be invited to an intake interview. The objective of the selection procedure with respect to the initial master’s degree is to verify the student’s chances of success. However, students with an initial master’s degree that does not have a direct apparent connection with space studies can still apply, and may be accepted depending on the power of conviction of their background and argumentation. Non-native English speaking students are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS certificate. Objectives The objectives of the programme are to develop students' knowledge of all aspects of space studies generally and, specifically, to impart: the ability to situate the relevance of students' own curriculum in the broad field of space studies; specialised knowledge and attitudes in specific fields relevant to space studies; insight in the development and realisation of large international projects; abilities necessary for the guiding of complex projects. After the completion of the programme, students will have attained the following learning outcomes: Knowledge and understanding LO1: Are capable of analysing and understanding the main scientific, technological, political, legal and economical aspects of space activities. This programme offers two possible major options: fundamental interactions or material physics. Profile of the programme It is possible to pursue two types of Master's Degrees in Physics: Research focus - option 1) fundamental interactions or - option 2) material physics Teaching focus. The Master's Degree in Physics, option fundamental interactions, offers future graduates an education that is centred on the great laws of the Universe (astrophysics, cosmology, nuclear physics, particle physics, theoretical physics, ...). The curriculum includes: a first year of 60 ECTS credits spread out over 9 credits of compulsory courses, focus-specific courses for 30 credits, an internship or individual work for 10 credits, elective courses for at least 11 credits and open courses(possibly in another Faculty) for a maximum of 7 credits a second year of 60 credits built around a consequential individual project, the thesis, which counts for 28 credits. A course in the history of experimental sciences is included in this second year. Students choose elective courses (30 credits) to finish off their education. The curriculum includes: a first year of 60 credits spread out over focus-specific courses for 30 credits, an internship for 10 credits, courses on additional technologies for 15 credits and a wide range of electives for 5 credits (possibly in another Faculty) a second year of 60 credits built around a consequential individual project, the thesis, which counts for 26 credits. Courses in the history of experimental sciences, intellectual property and plasmas and matter are included in this second year. Students choose elective courses (30 credits) to finish off their education. The Master's Degree in Physics, teaching focus, offers future graduates an education that is centred on the foundations of physics. The curriculum includes the 30 credits that are specific to the teaching focus and that students can choose to take either in Master 1 or in Master 2. Of these 30 credits, 28 are compulsory courses, and at least 2 credits to choose from the focus-specific electives. Also, students registered for the teaching focus have to take 16 credits of compulsory courses in Master 1 (history of experimental sciences, physical measurements, internships and individual work). The thesis, carried out in Master 2, counts for 28 credits. 46 elective credits remain to be chosen, spread out over the two years of the Master's programme. The student's choice must be ratified by the studies committee; the course list may include focus-specific courses if the student so desires. The studies committee makes certain that the student's choices are crossdisciplinary. Excessive specialisation could hinder the openmindedness that teachers need. Profile of the programme The Master's programme is designed as a coherent whole to be spread out over two years. It is the perfect opportunity to look to the future and determine what profession(s) you would like to practice. Your programme supervisor will guide you through the various choices to make that will best prepare you for the careers you are interested in. You may choose from four focuses. Whichever one you choose, internships, projects, and your thesis will give you ample opportunities to further your knowledge of the mathematical topics you are interested in and in which you can invest yourself in while taking advantage of individualised guidance. During the first year of the Master's programme, you will be asked to carry out an "integrated project". It can be an individual or group projected and will be designed according to your interests and objectives. You will be able to choose the theme of your work based on discussions with the different members of the Institute. To illustrate the type of project you can undertake, in 2008, three students along with a professor conducted a project in robotics. They created "intelligent robots" that were able to solve a Rubik's cube or escape from a maze without help. In the second year, you will have the opportunity to carry out an internship — in Belgium or abroad — according to the focus you have chosen. The goal of this internship is to let you make your first steps in the world of work. Students who are registered for the professional focus (careers in computer science or finance) will carry out their internship in a business. The 2nd cycle Master's programme offers two possible directions: 1) materials chemistry and engineering or 2) instrumental and applied organic chemistry. In the second year, students choose a specific focus: research-oriented, professional or teaching. Whichever focus the student chooses, he will devote a signigicatn amount of his second year to preparing a thesis with one of the research labs in the Institute of Chemistry or with an associated laboratory (biochemistry, molecular biology, toxicology, pharmacy,...). Students who wish to finish their studies quickly can opt for a one-year Master's programme. It does not allow further studies (doctorate) and may not qualify you for certain jobs. After completing the one-year Master's programme, it is possible to register in the higher secondary school teacher certification programme. Profile of the programme The first year includes internships and individual projects (12 ECTS credits) that allow students to choose their direction (materials chemistry and engineering or instrumental and applied organic chemistry) and to prepare for the thesis they will write the following year. Two sets of specific courses (18 credits) are offered for the two subprograms and all the Master's students have a common core of courses (22 credits). The programme is finished out with elective classes (8 credits) that students choose based on the subject of their thesis. In the second year, all students write a Master's thesis (28 credits) in a field that is researched in one of the host labs. They all take a course together in the history of chemistry, and there is also a set of electives and internships related to the focus they have chosen. The research focus prepares students for the profession of researcher through in-depth courses and through an internship in a research lab outside of UMONS, most often abroad. The professional focus prepares students for jobs in business, thanks to specific courses and an internship in the chemical industry. The teaching focus ensures that students receive training in compliance with the legislation (general courses, methodology for chemistry and biology, internships in schools). This program is taught in FRENCH. The Master’s Degree in Biology of Organisms and Ecology offers highly specialized training to understand current issues in biology and the environment. This programme covers a vast range of research fields including management of natural spaces, oceanography, marine biology, anthropology, entomology, ornithology... Emphasis is placed on rigorous foundations in the sciences both in the laboratory and in the field. Students may choose between three specialised study clusters developed and supported by the scientific work of our research laboratories. Outline of the programme The Master’s Degree in Biology of Organisms and Ecology offers state-of-the-art training supported by constant application of learning through internships in companies and/or laboratories in Belgium and abroad. The Institute of Biology at UMONS is involved in international research projects in such fields as marine biology and entomology (pollining insects), for example. The master’s thesis is completed during the two years of the programme, starting in the middle of the first year and finishing in the second year. During these two years, students will also have specialised courses to learn how to care for laboratory animals. These courses give rise to a certificate that is required to work with animals in laboratories. Special attention is given to learning scientific communication in both French and English thanks to research seminars and "Scientific Workshop Training". Students tailor their own curriculum (2/3 of the programme is electives) to include a great amount of lab work as well as internships in companies or in other academic institutions. The Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology Master’s Degree offers highly specialized crossdisciplinary training in a vast number of fields in the Life Sciences, from biochemistry to cell biology by way of genetics and molecular biology. Students may choose between four specialised clusters that have been developed and supported by the scientific work of our research laboratories. One of them is offered in collaboration with ULB on the campus at Gosselies. Profile of the programme The Master's Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology provides a state-of-the-art education based on a solid scientific background. What students learn here is put into practice through internships in companies and/or in research labs in Belgium or abroad. The Institute of Biology at UMONS is involved in international research projects in fields like microbiology, cell biology and proteomics. In collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, students in the Master's programme have access to several labs that are world renown in such highly advanced fields as neurobiology, magnetic imaging, molecular biology, to name a few. The master’s thesis is completed during the two years of the programme, starting in the middle of the first year and finishing in the second year. During these two years, students will also have specialised courses to learn how to handle and care for laboratory animals and their welfare. These courses give rise to a certificate that is required to work with animals in laboratories. Special attention is given to learning scientific communication in both French and English thanks to research seminars and "Scientific Workshop Training". Students tailor their own curriculum (2/3 of the programme is electives) to include a great amount of lab work as well as internships in companies or in other academic institutions. Key learning outcomes At the end of course programme, students will be able to: reason with the necessary rigour while applying their skills in the various disciplines of biology - from biochemistry to cell biology passing by genetics and molecular biology use the experimental approaches and the tools of the biologist in these disciplines implement crossdisciplinary skills such as: autonomy, rigour, group work, oral presentations communicate scientific concepts and analyses through the written and the spoken word in French or in English. Occupational profiles of graduates The Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology Master’s Degree opens the door to biochemistry and biotechnology laboratories, chemical laboratories, pharmaceutical research laboratories in universities or in industry, forensics, and so on. The holders of a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology can also be hired in basic or applied science programs if they continue their studies and complete a doctoral dissertation. Our graduates work in varied fields of expertise such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, police forensics units, academic research, in national or regional research centres, ... and in higher secondary school. This program is taught in FRENCH. Most of the mineral and energy resources are buried into the ground. Therefore, the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering is a major actor in prospection and evaluation of deposits, extraction of ores and hydrocarbons, and in the processing of ores and minerals. In addition, these processes will be dealt by the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering with the most adequate technical and economic means together with the lowest environmental impact. Human infrastructures, set up at the surface and into the subsurface of the earth, strongly rely on the characteristics of the soils and rocks. The expertise of the Master of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering is therefore of prime importance to the design and the achievement of civil engineering projects such as tunnels, dams, bridges, buildings, underground storage, etc. Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering prevent effects on human infrastructures of natural events such as earthquakes, landslides, etc. He or she will also prevent the impacts of human activities on the environment and on natural resources. In other words, the engineer is involved in problems such as groundwater protection area, rehabilitation of polluted sites, geological storage of CO2 and radioactive waste. Profile of the programme During the course of their studies, students in geology and mining engineering acquire a good knowledge both in Earth sciences and in engineering sciences. A basic training in Earth sciences - geology, mineralogy, petrography, stratigraphy, palaeontology and tectonics - is completed by training in hydrogeology, in applied geophysics, in geostatistics and modelling in geology. The training in mining engineering concerns rock mechanics, modelling in rock mechanics, extraction of mineral resources, mineral and waste processing, drilling technologies and reservoir engineering. The training in mining and geology offers two options: Resources and Infrastructures focused on ore-forming processes, design and construction of mining-like structures and, planning and optimisation of mining operations (Project) Environment and Natural Risks focused on management of geological risks, characterisation of brownfields subsurface and remediation of polluted soils. It also contains a specific project. Practice both in laboratory and on the field is specific to geology and mining engineering studies. Corporate visits, field excursions, field camps and a study tour are organised during the course of the studies. Learning is strongly connected with research (The Mining and Geology Division participates to 3 of the 5 research clusters of the Faculty of Engineering – Materials, Energy and Risks). Erasmus conventions were signed with several Institutions, especially in Spain. Solve problems in mining engineering: planning and optimisation of extraction of mineral and energy resources, design and construction of mining-like structures (tunnels, dams), deep drilling and mineral processing. Manage problems of environment and sustainable development in connection with mineral and energy resources, water resources, waste, polluted sites, geological hazards. Apply adequate methodologies, techniques and tools to efficiently solve technical, economic and environmental issues as mentioned above. Show initiative, autonomy and ability of observation and analysis. Occupational profiles Graduating in geology and mining engineering offers a wide range of job opportunities worldwide as well as in Belgium. Extractive industries and, more generally speaking, heavy industries are the traditional sectors of employment. Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering find jobs in mines and quarries, oil and gas production companies, groundwater production companies, cement works, mineral processing plants, steelmaking plants, etc. They occupy positions both in production departments as well as in R&D departments. There are also job opportunities in fields such as engineering geology and geotechnics for activities like: designing and construction of tunnels, dams and bridges or the management of geological risks (earthquakes, landslides, etc.), both in construction companies and in consultancies. Their training, both in Earth sciences and in engineering sciences, gives Masters of Science in Geology and Mining Engineering opportunities of employment in the field of the environmental engineering, with activities as diverse as the rehabilitation of mine and quarry sites, the management of waste, the study and prevention of environmental impact of industrial activities, the remediation of polluted sites. The founding of the Department of Technology Engineering dates back to the aftermath of the First World War, when Belgium was in great need of technical engineers to rebuild the country. Polyvalent engineers in the field of electro-mechanics were the first to obtain their degree in 1926.

Soon afterwards civil construction and chemistry were added to the curriculum, and finally, after the Second World War, electronics. So far over 7000 engineers have graduated from the Department.

1976 saw the creation of 'Labo De Nayer', an independent research laboratory accredited by the government that runs tests for the industry and the government. The laboratory, which boasts a division of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) certification, provides consultancy on technical matters and does applied, industrial research.... [-]
