The Postgraduate Diploma programme admission is open to B.Sc (3rd) Class and HND (upper credit minimum) graduate or its equivalent in Biology, Botany, Zoology, Entomology ,Ecology, Applied Biology, Microbiology and other related fields such as Crop protection, Agricultural Extension and Medical Laboratory Technology. Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) A candidate with a M.Sc. Degree in relevant Chemistry field with a minimum CGPA of 3.3 on a 5 point scale from a recognized University may be admitted. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree A candidate who holds a Masters Degree, with a minimum of CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or average of 60%, which includes coursework and research thesis in a relevant chemistry discipline, from a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied. Mandatory duration of programme A uniform duration for the programme for all Universities, making allowance for minor individual university variation shall be adopted as follows: 1.Postgraduate diploma programme Full-time: Minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of four (4) semesters. Part-time: Minimum of four(4) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters. 2.Masters degree programme Full-time: Minimum of three (3) semesters and a maximum of five (5) semesters. Part-time: Minimum of five (5) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters. 3.Doctorate degree Programme Full-time: Minimum of six (6) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters. Part-time: Minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of ten (10) semesters. Departmental Postgraduate Committee There is a Post Graduate committee of the department. The Head of department serves as the Chairman of this committee (unless he is not up to rank of Senior lecturer). Members include all academic staff involved in the Postgraduate programmes of the department. There is also the Department Postgraduate Examination Board. This Board has the Head of Department (provided he is up to rank of senior lecturer) as the Chairman, all professors in the department, and other senior members of the department, provided the number does not exceed five. Where external examination is involved the external examiner is a member of this board. Industrial Physics Introduction The Department of Industrial Physics started in 1982 under the defunct Anambra State University of Science and Technology. The Department offers Postgraduate programmes leading to the award of the following degrees: Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Masters of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Philosophy ( M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physics. Philosophy Philosophy of postgraduate programmes is anchored on the unbiased and systematic observations, accurate documentation and interpretation of facts and phenomena with a view to generating a body of knowledge. The graduate programme of the Department of Industrial Physics provides a study of: The fundamental principles governing the behavior of the physical universe. The methods of scientific investigations and its applications to the technological problems of today. It places emphasis on the interactions between science, technology and society which is geared towards translating scientific methods into technological breakthroughs which are aimed at solving the problems of the society in which we find ourselves. Aims and Objectives The aims and objectives of postgraduate programmes are: To produce high level man power in the sciences through the acquisition of requisite skills and knowledge, for national development. To develop in science graduates a sense of inquiry capacity for independent research and motivation to extend the frontiers of science and technology. To produce graduates who will be adequately equipped for relevance in the global knowledge economy. To produce graduates who are capable of appropriate scientific principles for solving problem for the promotion of human well being. To produce manpower with optimal competencies and skill to function effectively in the academia and the private sector. The postgraduate programme provides a practical approach to Physics which will be developed from a systematic collection for possible applications in industrial or technological setting. Thus it is hoped that at the end of such a programme, a student must have demonstrated practical ability to carry on original and independent scientific research. Thesis and Dissertation A panel of Examiners shall be constituted to orally assess a thesis or dissertation according to the university regulations, but the examination shall be guided by the following: Postgraduate Diploma Project Report An External EXAMINER shall read and grade the report. Academic Regulation Academic session An academic session consists of two semesters. Each semester normally will comprise of 15 weeks of teaching and two weeks of examinations. Modular System All Physics Postgraduate programmes shall be run on a modular system, i.e. the Course Unit system. All courses should therefore be subdivided into more or less self sufficient and logically consistent packages that are taught within a semester and examined at the end of that particular semester. Unit weights should be attached to each course. Definition of Units or Credits Units are loads attached to a course. One unit load is equivalent to one hour per week semester of 15 weeks of lecture or two hours of tutorials or three hours per week of term paper work or laboratory practical per semester of 15 weeks. Objectives The ESUT Department of Architecture is committed to a high quality of professional education aimed at producing architects that are capable of solving complex environmental design problems. Post Graduate Programmes The Department runs two programmes viz. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Architecture. 1.Post Graduate Diploma The Postgraduate Diploma (Architecture) is designed for two (2) semesters within a minimum period of 12 (twelve) calendar months to bring up students (candidates) who were unable to meet up with the minimum academic Final Cumulative Grade Point Average (FCGPA) of 3.00 on the five (5) point scale (or of any adjustment)--- from the studies of Bachelor of Sciences (Architecture) degree, or equivalent --- so as to qualify to apply for admission into the Master of Sciences (Architecture) programme in the Department of Architecture. 2.M.Sc. (Architecture) Degree The programme extends over a minimum of two academic years of two semesters each, with course work as well as research culminating in a Dissertation comprising a Report and Dissertation Design and Drawings, to be defended before an External Examiner. Geography & Meteorology Introduction The global Environment Question came into Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) as a technological issue with the creation of the faculty of Environmental Sciences in 1985. In 1991 the faculty set up an Environmental Management programme for the principal aim of developing and training specialist Environmental Managers and monitoring the environment. After the 1992 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the programme progressed beyond the common, 'what of the Environment' to ask how, where, when, why and eventually the bigger WHAT of the environment questions, which are more pertinent to environmental management and survival. It is known that food production and water resource development, industrialization and urbanization are essential elements of human existence, which have profound impacts on our environment. In the interest of Environmental sustainability, we now design our specific objectives at the post-graduate levels to address six main questions, viz: How do we control and manage our environmental pollution and degradation? How do we respond to climate change problems? How do we farm and how do we industrialize and or Urbanize in environment friendly ways? Where do we urbanize? How do we manage our land, air and water resources? How do we manage man-environmental hazard relationships? To answer these questions, the crucial issue of the assessment of the environment comes into play. Thus we ask: How do we develop our environmental resources? What are the positive and negative impacts of resources development on the environment? How do the economist, sociologist, psychologist, physical scientist and the ecologist etc perceive our actions? How do we reduce environmental pollution, climate change, flooding and environmental degradation to achieve environmental sustainability? What do we do to substitute 'poverty' with general affluence through appropriate environmental management practices? These questions which are very crucial to Nigerians today for tomorrow constitute the foci of our researches. The researches are not only evaluative but also descriptive, designative, predictive and prescriptive regarding the above crucial environmental questions. We therefore adopt international outlook and approach. Environmental issues such as water and atmospheric pollution and climate change problems involve trans-national boundaries. The Department of Geography and meteorology provides the necessary undergraduate base for these advanced questions. Sc and Ph.D in: Project management Construction management The programmes are board-based, designed for technocrats, business executives, academicians, practitioners and person who wish to develop other project, and cost management knowledge, practice, skills and research capabilities in the context of business, commerce and industry. Philosophy The programmes are rooted in the belief that the built environment industry mirrors the national economy. Economics that still have large mass of housing and infrastructure to provide and/or maintain for critical masses of their people have to put the industry in a front burner. The provision of high quality work force power to meet the challenges of a developing economy is indispensable. These challenges include requirements and research endeavours to promote the built environment industry and general development of the society. The programmes are therefore geared towards producing high quality manpower that will not only be self employing but employ others and could be of consultancy status in the fields of study. General Aim/Objectives The main aim of the programme is to enhance the student's marketability and self-reliance; equip them professionally, and academically by imparting sound knowledge, theory and practice of the arts and science of the application of project, construction and cost management and technological skills, techniques, knowledge, tools and processes to projects and operations. The graduates will be well grounded in the theory and practice of project, construction, or cost management and technology; be able to teach subjects in their area of specialization and also, advance the frontiers of the bodies of knowledge through scholarly research. The academic degrees awarded are Master of Sciences (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in quantity surveying with specialization in Project Management, construction economics and infrastructure cost management. These are mainly for highly academically qualified candidates that aspire to teach and carry out research in project management construction economics and cost management of, infrastructure and related fields. The postgraduate diploma (PGD) is a remedial/transitory qualification for candidates whose deficiency are either academic or subject related, and cannot be admitted straight for the masters programme. Admission requirements The programmes are board based. Students of diverse backgrounds are accepted for the programmes. Postgraduates diploma programme The normal admission requirements for the Postgraduate diploma (PGD) programmes are: A bachelors degree in any of the cognate disciplines or third class or pass level division, in Quantity Surveying from ESUT or any other recognized University. Or, HND, not lower than pass level or equivalent qualification M.Sc Programme The normal admission requirements for the M. Sc programme are: Matriculation requirement of the university which is 5 0'level credit which must include English, Maths and Physics. An honours degree, not lower than second class lower division in Quantity Surveying for M. Sc from ESUT or any other recognized institution. A postgraduate diploma (PGD) in Quantity Surveying At least a HND (Upper Credit) minimum and a current registration of Quantity surveyors Registration board of Nigeria (QSRBN). In rare cases candidates that do not meet the required CGPA , but have relevant experience, as Project Managers, or other related positions may be accepted. PhD Programme The normal admission requirements for the PhD programme are: An honours degree, not lower than a first class division, or equivalent for ESUT or any other recognized University in construction or project management, Quantity Surveying or Cognate Discipline. Or, An honours degree, not lower than second class division, or equivalent qualification from ESUT or any other recognized University or other institution plus an M.Sc in Quantity Surveying, construction or project management or related field with not lower than 60% or 3.50 CGPA on a 5 point scale respectively, or equivalent on a 4.0 scale. An M. Phil in construction management or Quantity Surveying or equivalent with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5.0 Scale grading or equivalent on a 4.0 scale. In exceptional cases, experienced candidates with lower grade point but have highly revered professional qualifications may be accepted for the above programmes. These are however treated on a case-by-case and individual basis and may be required to audit some lower level courses. Admissions would be based on the availability of supervisions. Urban & Regional Planning Introduction Rapid population growth and the associated rapid rates of city growth coupled with technological changes have generated an increasing demand for planners on all aspects of human endeavours particularly in urban and rural areas of developing countries. The frightening rate of rural-urban migration and the concomitant physical, social, economic and cultural problems resulting from, or precipitated in urban areas calls for urgent need of planners with requisite academic, professional and technical skills and capacities to deal with such situations. On the other hand, the rural areas of Nigeria suffer from declining youth population, skilled manpower, finance, modernization of decaying agricultural production infrastructure and the much needed social amenities to cater for needs of over 70% of the country's population. These scenarios call for concerted efforts on part of government and universities to initiate new programmes as well as, redesign existing ones to meet the ever changing needs and challenges of sustainable national, physical and socio-economic development. The role of planners in this regard cannot be over-emphasized. Nigeria is in direct need of planners to help manage urban and rural spaces or areas. At the moment, competent academically and professionally trained planners are indeed only produced in very few Nigerian universities. The shortage of professional planners must be stemmed if chaos is to be mitigated in urban and rural spaces. This is why the department of Urban and Regional Planning Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has seized the challenge given by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to reform its postgraduate programs to achieve demands for national development and international best practices. Goals and Objectives The goal of the programmes is to produce planners registerable with NITP/TOPREC who are both academicians and core professionals. Against this background, the graduate degree programmes are designed with the goal of increasing the ability of students/participants to prepare regional, urban, town and village development plans by studying current practices and providing techniques for: Analysing and understanding how regions, cities, towns, and villages work and are likely to develop; Assessing the resources and constraints to effective planning and development; and Strengthening institutional capacities for the implementation of regional, urban, town and village development plans. Against this background, the following objectives predominate: To develop students' understanding of URP through the study of theories, methods and techniques for planning, designing and managing land use activities and environment; To assist the students to acquire constructive understanding of the social, economic, technological and legislative framework of society with the physical, social and economic processes in operation and, the potential capacities of the frameworks to make more coherent and relevant collaborative policy formulation and implementation; To provide students with varied practical experience of realistic planning problems; To encourage students to develop interest in planning skills and research methods; To contribute to the manpower requirements of the nation by educating and training of prospective planners and also offering of refresher courses to already registered planners through in-house/programme seminars, workshops and colloquium; and finally. To provide training and re-training programmes that will elevate sub-professionals to professional cadre of the discipline. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION, ADMISSION AND REGULATIONS 1.Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in URP Admission Requirements Graduates of ESUT, or graduates from other universities acceptable to the Postgraduate School and Senate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), who hold a minimum of Pass Degree in Urban and Regional Planning with relevant 5 years post qualification experience are eligible to apply for the one (1) academic year programme which comprises two semester course work and final year dissertation or project. Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent in Urban and Regional Planning with Upper Credit, or Lower Credit Pass with a minimum of five year practical experience(s), are also eligible to apply for admission for the one (1) year duration (as defined above) programme. Graduates of ESUT, or graduates from other Universities acceptable to Senate who hold a minimum of a Third Class Degree in Architecture, Building, Land Surveying; Civil Engineering, Geography, Estate Management, Economics, Sociology, Law and other related fields, as well as, Holders of HND or its equivalent in the relevant disciplines as mentioned above but with a minimum of lower credit pass with relevant post qualification experience of 5yrs are also eligible to apply for admission for the one (1) year programme. Duration of Study The minimum period of study is one (1) academic year. Students are however required to attain necessary prescribed number of hours per week during the period of the study. 2.Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) Programme Admission Requirements Graduates of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) or graduates from other recognized approved universities/institutions who hold or obtain a minimum of Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) in Urban and Regional Planning or Third Class Degree with 5 years relevant post qualification experience in the same field are eligible to apply for admission, for two (2) academic years duration. Holders of Enugu State University of Science and Technology Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Urban and Regional Planning who score a FCGPA of not less than 2.5 are eligible to apply for admission for a two (2) year duration study programme. Graduates of Enugu State University of Science and Technology or graduates from other recognized Universities who hold a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in Architecture, Surveying, Law, Economics Sociology, Civil Engineering or from any other cognate discipline are also eligible to apply for admission for the two year professional masters programme.
