To fulfill this demand, the new Evolutionary Systems Biology (ESB) Master's program (start: Winter Term 2016) provides the training necessary for this new type of scientist. Specifically, ESB master's students will: Learn how to understand and handle modern “- omics” data sets. Develop key computational skills and delve into biological modelling. Combine experimental “wet-lab” technologies with quantitative “dry-lab” methods. Apply these skills to questions arising from evolutionary biology, development, comparative genomics, and systems biology. Vienna offers a unique scientific environment for the ESB Master's program, which will benefit from the expertise of research groups in population genetics, evo-devo, systems biology, and biomathematics at the University of Vienna and the Vetmeduni Vienna. Master's students will be able to draw upon the resources of two Universities, and on established connections to world-class research institutes such as the Gregor Mendel Institute, IST Austria, the Vienna Graduate School of Population Genetics, and the evolVienna network. Course Overview The ESB master’s programme aims to provide hands-on education, with practical skills courses designed to complement all lectures in the core curriculum. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on research, with two lab rotations and a research-based master's thesis project providing training in cutting-edge research methods. This programme particularly includes: Courses covering population genetics, comparative genomics, molecular evolution, EvoDevo and systems biology. Practical courses introducing modelling, programming, and statistical data analysis for biologists. An extensive research component, including rotations in multiple research groups, one-on-one training, and individual research projects. Special skill courses on giving scientific talks and writing successful grant proposals. The expected length of the Master in ESB programme is four semesters. In line with the curriculum nine modules (MES1-9), a Master’s Thesis and an Oral Defense, totalling 120 ECTS, have to be completed to be awarded the degree. Admission The ESB master's programme is aimed at students with an interest in biological research and quantitative methods. As an entry requirement applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in biology or in a related field (such as biotechnology, biomedicine, or bioinformatics). Advanced quantitative skills are not a prerequisite. Applicants with a BSc in other natural sciences (e.g. Physics) or mathematics and statistics may also be admitted to the ESB master's programme, provided that they complete additional courses in basic biology. In this international study program, students holding a Bachelor’s degree can achieve a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) within 18 months. After a three-year doctoral program, the title Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Dr. rer. nat. respectively can be earned. Alternatively, after successful completion of both their medical studies and the Ph.D. study program, medical students may apply for the degree of a “Medical Doctor – Doctor of Philosophy” (MD-Ph.D.). Due to the lack of a semester structure, the integration of different subjects into a consistently structured curriculum, and the possibility to directly change to the doctoral program without writing a Master’s thesis, the duration of study is shortened. All courses are held in English.The study program is divided into two segments. The first year comprises 36 weeks of lectures, tutorials, seminars, methods courses, and individually supervised research projects. Laboratory rotations and individual supervision as well as the involvement of lecturers from the Max Planck Institutes and the German Primate Center in the teaching assure a combination of theory, practical projects, and intensive research work. The first study year ends with one written and two oral examinations which qualify for the Master’s thesis. The Master’s thesis can be waived for students who have passed these examinations with good or excellent results so that they can change to the three-year doctoral program directly.In the postgraduate segment of the program, the student is accompanied by a ‘thesis committee’, consisting of the supervisor of the thesis and two additional faculty members of the study program. Also the participation in scientific conferences and courses at an early stage as well as the publishing in international journals are part of the prerequisites for graduation. The graduate program encourages research stays in and co operations with external guest laboratories.A very important aim of the study program includes social integration.
