The consecutive (follow-on) Master's degree program "English Philology" is the English-language version of the degree program "Anglická filologie"; it follows on from the Bachelor degree program of the same name. The aim of the program is to produce graduates who are specialists in English philology - proficient users of English (C2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) with a solid knowledge of English linguistics and a deep knowledge of the literature and culture of English-speaking countries, who are aware of the professional literature in these fields and other information resources.
Graduates of the two-year consecutive (follow-on) Master's degree have a wide range of competencies in philological disciplines. Their knowledge demonstrates a qualitative and quantitative development of the theoretical knowledge, thinking and awareness gained as part of their previous Bachelor's studies of English philology. Courses in disciplines such as linguistic pragmatics, text linguistics, contrastive linguistic analysis, and sociolinguistics enable students to gain a comprehensive overview of the disciplinary landscape. The course in historical grammar gives them insights into the diachronic dimension of language and linguistics, Graduates also gain a deeper knowledge of the literature and culture of Great Britain (Medieval English literature) and the USA (Selected chapters from literature)....

The Master in Linguistics is the science of language. You don’t learn all the languages in the world, but you learn to understand them. As a Master’s degree student of Linguistics at the University of Aarhus, you deal with many different aspects of language and how it is used. You study topics such as the way languages change as dynamic systems over periods of time of longer (e.g., over hundreds or thousands of years) or shorter durations (e.g., over a person’s lifetime), applied linguistics, cognition and language, linguistic typology (the unity and diversity of languages), as well as interactional linguistics (the structure of interpersonal interaction). In all of these subject areas, you learn to analyze data using subject-specific methodologies and insights. In addition, some courses are geared toward research projects....

MASTER IN LINGUISTIC DATA SCIENCES
Language use and linguistic data are essential in various disciplines today and in all areas of our digitalized society. It is widely recognized that society needs people who understand language as data, who can work analytically and can analyze linguistic data systematically. This Master’s degree programme focuses on the interfaces between languages and digitalization in today’s world.
This programme, taught entirely in English, provides an opportunity to study language in today’s digitalized society from a variety of perspectives. These consist of sociolinguistics, language technology and translation. The core of this programme consists of a set of courses in empirical linguistics (syntax, phonetics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, contact linguistics, translation studies) that offer various areas of specialization for the students. In addition, we cross disciplinary boundaries and collaborate with computer science as well as data sciences and statistics. This means that students are encouraged to choose from optional packages that be used to tailor the programme to suit individual needs. Many of the courses utilize text and speech data mining and big data analytics....

Typically, the course will run over three semesters. Semesters 1 and 2 will involve taught modules (lectures and activities). Semester 3 will be dedicated to the writing of a dissertation. The three semesters can be taken back-to-back in one calendar year using the summer period for the dissertation module (September – August). Alternatively, the course can be taken over one and a half years. Part-time options are also available. Each semester is structured into 12 weeks or units in which three modules are taken. The programme is well suited for students who wish to study language from a comparative perspective. The programme places special emphasis on the formal aspects of grammar, in particular, syntax and phonology. The approach to these disciplines relies on comparative studies of many languages.
The Master's of Philosophy in Theoretical Linguistics covers graduate level studies in theoretical linguistics and is to be seen as an extension of work at the Bachelor's level. The programme places special emphasis on the formal aspects of grammar, in particular, syntax and phonology. The approach to these disciplines relies on comparative studies of many languages. Students will develop insight into the structure of language, comparative aspects of linguistic research, social and geographic variation, the historical development of languages and language acquisition. At the Master's level, students will develop special interests based on their coursework and will write either a Master's Thesis or two article-length papers....

Linguistic proficiency is a key factor for smart as well as inclusive growth of the economy within Europe as specified in the Europe 2020 strategy and the Education and Training strategic framework 2020. With this in mind, we have designed an innovative and high-quality MA program in linguistics. The program is unrivaled in its combination of theoretical and empirical linguistics, which will provide students with cutting-edge skills and competencies and enhance their career options in the world of education and training as well as in the world of work. Specifically, the proposed program provides a thorough exposure to theoretical as well as empirical linguistics. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of linguistic theories for all levels of language and will learn how to apply them to analyze new sets of linguistic data. They will also be instructed on how to perform empirical studies to test linguistic hypotheses, both in terms of experiments and corpus studies. Great emphasis will be put on the way in which the two research fields can mutually benefit from each other. Students will not only know linguistic theories for their own sake, but they will also learn how to derive from them empirical research questions that can be validated experimentally. At the same time, empirical approaches to linguistics will always be grounded in theoretical work to suggest potential topics for experiments and for the discussion and interpretation of empirically derived results....
