To gain admission into the Nigerian universities (both public and private universities are in every state of the federation including the FCT), a prospective student has to sit for and successfully pass the UME(Universities Matriculation Examination) which is administered by JAMB (Joint Admission and Matriculation Board). Also individual universities regularly screen prospective candidates to make sure they are up to par for university level work in Nigeria.

The Commission has in the past organized the development of Minimum Academic Standards and subsequently, accreditation for all approved undergraduate programmes offered in Nigerian Universities. For postgraduate programmes, NUC has concluded the process of developing benchmarks and minimum academic standards as a follow up to the success recorded in the undergraduate programmes. These Benchmarks and Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) for postgraduate programmes in Agricultural Sciences are to facilitate accreditation of the programmes in Nigerian Universities.
