This two-year programme is designed to prepare its graduates for challenging careers in international and non-governmental organisations, public administration and academia, in the field of human rights law or another field of public international law. The programme consists of the following modules:
Compulsory courses in international law and human rights (40 credits) of which 20 credits are common for all students. In addition, students must study 20 credits in public international law. These courses may belong to the area of international human rights law, international refugee law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, general international law, or any other field of public international law.
A research seminar and a Master's thesis (40 credits).
Elective specialisation (20 credits) in one freely chosen subject, within public international law or any other subject at Åbo Akademi University.

The School of Law is one of the oldest faculties of the University of Tartu, where lawyers have been educated since the university was founded in 1632. Our alumni form 87% of the attorneys-at-law, 95% of the prosecutors and nearly all of the judges in Estonia. Also, Estonia’s previous and current judges at the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union obtained their degrees at the University of Tartu.

The Programme is taught over a period of two academic years and is divided into two parts: theoretical (1 year) and practical (1 year).
