Master's Program in Geoecology
The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå University offers a 2-year Master of Science Program for students that would like to specialize in Geoecology. Geoecology integrates the fields of Geosciences and Ecology. With an emphasis on the Nordic landscape, you will study natural earth processes, climate change and the effects of anthropogenic impact, such as resource utilization and pollution. These processes result in a more dynamic environment than what is generally recognized, and you will develop an awareness of environmental changes on timescales from years to millennia.
InstructionThe Study Program starts with a field course, Field Methods in Geoecology. After that, you will have opportunities to take theoretical courses and applied courses directed towards field studies, as well as courses directed towards Geographic Information Systems. The program is very flexible, as the only compulsory courses are the first course, Field methods in Geoecology, 15 ETCS, and the final Degree thesis, 30 ECTS. Courses can otherwise be chosen freely, as long as the requirements for the M.Sc. degree are met....

Coastal Communities and Regional Development is an international, multidisciplinary master’s program on the development of rural and remote areas in the past and in the future. It focuses on coastal communities along the North Atlantic and the Arctic, although theoretical foundations might be found in other regions.
The program is specially built on the principle and practice of sociology, macroeconomics and geography/planning. By the end of the program, students understand the changes and challenges of coastal communities' development and have versed themselves in methods and skills to predict their development and manage it. The language of teaching and general communication is English. The program is offered by the University Centre of the Westfjords in Ísafjörður in co-operation with the University of Akureyri. Teaching takes place in Ísafjörður....

This Master's program aims at enhancing and deepening civil engineers' qualification in the field of anti-seismic security of buildings and facilities during their design and implementation.
Bulgaria and many other countries have active seismic activities on their territories, which presupposes that they should be secured against this destructive natural phenomenon.
Taking special measures during the design of the buildings and facilities against seismic activities is related to one of the main requirements to investment projects – securing people's health and life.
The program trains specialists in the areas of geophysical and earthquake engineering who are capable of evaluating, predicting and reducing the risk of earthquakes....

The Master in Geography and Spatial Planning is designed to respond to the growing need for highly qualified experts that can embrace the multidimensionality and complexity of the evolution of cities and regions, reflecting global changes and local dynamics.
Despite the demand for European or transnational coordination in spatial planning, national planning cultures and concepts within Europe continue to be markedly heterogeneous. You will be prepared for understanding a wide range of European and transnational planning philosophies and processes, as well as transcending current limits.
The programme addresses key social, economic and environmental challenges with a geographical and multi-scalar perspective. Sustainable planning strategies require a holistic approach and push researchers and experts to enlarge the scope of their competencies and move beyond singular disciplinary culture....

IMACS is an integrated Master of Science designed by 4 institutions with a wide range of leadership in clay science :
the University of Poitiers (UP) in France (co-ordinator),
the University of Aveiro (UA) in Portugal,
the Technical University of Crete (TUC) (Chania) in Greece,
the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) (Porto Alegre) in Brazil.
Why clay minerals?
Interest in clays results from their common availability, and their unique physical and chemical properties. No other minerals currently attract so great an interest.
In addition to their conventional ancient use as bricks, tiles, ceramics and for paper coating and waste management more recently, clays have found many novel applications. Clay minerals have provided a boost in technology because they are inexpensive nanomaterials, and as such, they have a huge potential for the synthesis of polymer nanocomposites with superior mechanical and thermal properties. The optimisation of adsorption, colloidal and rheological properties also opens prospects of using clay minerals for medical uses, pollution control, and environmental protection. Clay minerals play a role in economic geology (both as an important mineral resource and in energy resource exploration) and soil management. Clays also have many negative effects in geotechnical engineering, manifested in the form of landslides, mudflows, and the deterioration of clay-based construction materials....

Environmental Geosciences graduates will gain the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge of Earth sciences, specifically in the field of geology, environmental geochemistry (e.g., environmental contamination), environmental hydrogeology and paleoecology (e.g., global climate development). During their studies, students will gain experience with modern analytical procedures and will attend practical courses and workshops.
Environmental Geosciences are currently at the forefront of many scientific disciplines and have an important practical outcome as well. The understanding of pollutants’ behavior in various environmental compartments, remediation of contaminated sites and evolution of ecosystems in the Earth’s history are just a few examples of the topics covered by the program. The laboratories at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences are equipped with high-end instrumentation for advanced specialized methods used in environmental geochemistry, such as speciation and specialized isotope analyses. These techniques are currently fast emerging and crucial in the developing fields of Environmental Geochemistry and Biogeochemistry....

Geological Resources and Geological Engineering (081800)
Geological Resources and Geological Engineering is the discipline of geological resources exploration, evaluation, development and utilization. The discipline involves two major areas of resources and the environment which are closely related to sustainable social and economic development. The development of geological resources and geological engineering not only provides the most basic material conditions for the development of the social productive forces but the work to be done in advance in industrial and agricultural construction. Thus, the discipline is closely related to social development and human survival and it takes a very important position in national economic construction. It is a subject full of development potential....

In many places in the world, we experience rapid environmental change. In the Master’s Program in Polar Landscape and Quaternary Climate, you get knowledge and skills necessary for the understanding and analysis of polar and alpine landscapes. You get insights into how they have changed on different time scales, linked to climate variations during the Quaternary period.
Climate change is particularly rapid in the glacial and periglacial landscapes of polar and alpine regions. The program will provide you with knowledge about the global climate system’s functioning and about methods used to reconstruct climate and environmental change. In addition, human and natural causes of climate change are presented and discussed....
