Aside from the distinguishing between microeconomics and macroeconomics, students who are studying economics must also learn the difference between positive economics and normative economics. The former deals with that which is, while the later deals with that which ought to be. Other distinguishing characteristics include economic theory and applied economics.

The Master of Philosophy in Economics is an intensive two-year Research Master's programme in economics, econometrics and finance. The programme is conducted at the Tinbergen Institute (TI), giving students the opportunity to obtain a thorough grounding in economics and to develop their own projects in an engaged, research-focused environment. The Master of Philosophy in Economics prepares students to pursue a PhD, preferably at one of the faculties cooperating with TI.
The Tinbergen Institute (TI) is a school for research and graduate education run jointly in collaboration with the Economics Faculties of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), VU University Amsterdam and the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).The TI is committed to offering excellent Master's programmes in economics, econometrics and finance.
