It is about potentiality, adaptation, discovery. The Master in Product Design program combines the study of theory with the process of direct experience. Besides honing the “problem solving” skills that every designer needs, you will also develop a “problem defining” approach: the ability to determine the true parameters of each design challenge. As you learn to follow your intuition and promote your aesthetic vision within those parameters, you will cultivate more awareness of the reasons behind your own design choices, and those of others. During your workshop collaborations with eminent professionals from local studios and businesses, you will have the range to experiment with design methodologies as you develop a deeper understanding of product design and its role in our world. Audience The program is designed for candidates who have a first-level degree in design, architecture, engineering, visual arts, or related disciplines. Goals The Specializing Master provides the tools for managing the design and construction of sailing and motor boats, from project brief to definition of general plans, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, fitting-out of interiors, deck and board equipment, boat systems, production in the yard and control of executive stages. Market The need to train people to work in the yachting sector is based on the rapid and exponential growth recorded by this sector in recent years. This growth has been further encouraged by the issuing of provisions to encourage the development of this market (from simplifying procedures for port construction, to reducing the tax burden on recreational boats over 10 m. etc.). For this reason, the sector shows today a strong professional vocation, with regard both to the skills necessary to the design of recreational boats, their components, and accessories, and to the management of the different stages of the production process. In particular, the sector is going through a stage of strong growth and development in quantitative and economic terms, although full maturity has not yet been reached. This lag is explained partly by the current lack of executives able to manage and direct this phase of change. Course Program A ship, whether sailing boat or motoryacht, is a complex product that integrates several systems for propulsion, living quarters, and various accessory functions. Every decision about one of the technical systems (hull, appendages, interior layout, propulsion, onboard equipment) also affects all the others. A yacht, whether made series or as one-off, calls for many different construction techniques and a variety of materials. Its interior will reflect design language and fashion, while market competition tends to imbue every ship with a certain amount of innovation. The Specializing Master takes this complexity into account and intersperses classroom experience – nine learning modules that outline different disciplinary fields – with design exercises and visits to shipyards and companies active in the industry, as well as to applied research institutes. The principles of each field are explained and students acquire the skills to apply what they have learned in their designs. Their various special abilities are brought together in workgroups that are called upon to develop a series of work projects. Duration The Specializing Master lasts one year and is scheduled to start in February 2017. Classroom training represents a commitment of three to four days per week. The internship at a company in the shipbuilding industry or a design studio runs for 392 hours and is performed full time at the end of the classroom training. The students of the Master in Diseño Sostenible de Producto study in depth the complexity and diversity of contemporary creative product design, which is based on analysing the demands of project management and incorporating new social values, such as sustainability. Objectives The aim of the master’s course is to train design professionals in the areas of innovation, creativity and project and team management. A special emphasis and depth of study are placed on the theme of sustainability, so as to offer multi-directional training and demonstrate different facets and points of view. The objective therefore is to produce designers with a cutting-edge training in a field that is predicted to be the driving force of innovation in the coming years. Methodology The contents of the master’s course are organised into four areas by topic: Sustainability, Techniques, Management and Projects. The courses in the Sustainability area focus on the values and concepts that underpin the analysis and design of the product life cycle. The objective of this area is to strengthen the professional role of the product designer with specific vocabulary and concepts, as well as to offer training in business and company management models. The courses in the Technical area focus on technical product development and the study of users and production trends. The objective of this area is to give more specific, in-depth training in new and more specific projection formulas. The courses in the Management area focus on product feasibility analysis at the design, production and cost management levels, and also from the viewpoint of marketing. The objective of this area is to focus on sustainable development geared toward business creation. The courses in the Projects area touch on a variety of topics that complement the entire course process, encourage individual reasoning, reinforce project methodologies and promote social activism through design. In the second part of the master’s course, the final project begins by partnering with a company, where a project is developed with a professional mindset and demanding criteria. This is a complex design project that brings together all the knowledge acquired throughout the course The final project is supplemented by courses designed to optimise the quality of the student's presentation of the design. During the coursework, inter-disciplinary seminars and workshops are held with guest specialists so as to develop in practice different topics of interest and consolidate the knowledge obtained in the theoretical and practical courses. In the programme, the focus will be on innovation and design processes in interdisciplinary projects and in cooperation with private companies or the public sector. In the first year, students acquire more in-depth knowledge within the main field of study, innovation and design, by defining and identifying challenges. Students are expected to be able to position themselves in the subject area and master the processes and models applied in the main field of study, for example regarding the planning, management and realization of projects, including risk management, as well as techniques for innovation and design processes. In addition, students will learn to apply research methods, mostly qualitative ones, that are of relevance in the main field of study.
