Master of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design We educate future interior architects. The most important practical subjects are the design of space, furniture and architectural details. For instance, the students learn to design homes, schools, cafés, both modern and demanding historical interiors. The students also learn about painting and landscaping, photography and philosophy. The Academy of Arts has educated interior architects for more than seventy years. One can honestly say that all of Estonia’s most important interiors have been designed by our graduates and current faculty members. We try to adhere to a principle that stresses the integrity of form and content but also considers the function of the space or the item. We keep our finger on the pulse of our times, while also searching for our own path. In our climate, people unfortunately spend most of their time indoors and not outdoors, and therefore, whether we like it or not, indoor spaces have a great impact on our everyday lives. Therefore, interior architects and furniture designers have a unique opportunity to improve the world – to use their ideas to make people happier. INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND FURNITURE DESIGN AS A PROFESSION The field in which we operate – the built-up environment as a whole – forces us to synthesise and perceive architectural problems and environmental issues more generally. At the same time, we deal with all the smallest tangible details and problems that people are personally interested in. And we must know what is happening in the other design fields and fine arts, and to be familiar with a large number of technical disciplines. These include, among others: lighting and acoustics, heating and ventilation, building and finishing materials, building and furniture structures, and various computer programs. If we add good communications skills, necessary for understanding and influencing the client or various interest groups related to the design process, as well as the need to be well-acquainted with the specifics of various design fields, we get quite an awe-inspiring list. WHAT ARE THE STUDIES LIKE? The three-year BA programme places the greatest emphasis on the theoretical and practical learning of general art subjects and technical disciplines, which enables the graduate to continue in the MA programme, or to work as an assistant in an architectural or interior architecture office, in various media fields, as well as in manufacturing, service and business enterprises. The MA programme basically focuses on various specialised creative projects, the in-depth analysis of the elements of the built-up environment, and the completion of the master’s thesis. In accordance with the curriculum, the studies add up to 120 ECTS credits. Graduates of the MA programme can work as independent specialists in both the design and construction fields, in the furniture industry, at media and advertising companies, as well as in service and retail enterprises. INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND FURNITURE DESIGN AT THE ACADEMY OF ARTS Interior architects have been educated at the Academy of Arts for more than 70 years. One can honestly say that all of Estonia’s most important interiors have been designed by our graduates and current faculty members. One could mention Leila Pärtelpoeg, who restored the Tallinn Town Hall and numerous manor houses; Väino Tamm, the foremost modernist of the 1960s; and current Professor Emeritus Vello Asi; Pille Lausmäe, famous for her luxurious minimalist interiors; and Tiina Mang, who has gained fame for her neo-functionalist furniture. The department is headed by Professor Toivo Raidmets, who has created sensations with his striking club interiors and interesting furniture. The foundation for the education of interior architects in Estonia was established by a presidential decree on 1 August 1938. To date, 551 interior architects, studying full- and part-time, have received their professional higher education diplomas. The preliminary step for the establishment of the Department of Interior Architecture was the opening of a woodworking workshop at the Tallinn Industrial Art School in 1917, where furniture design was also taught. A more professional education of interior architects was initiated in 1938, when an interior architecture course was introduced at the State Higher Art School, which was created on the basis of the industrial art school. The mission-oriented idea to educate interior architects may have come from the members of the progressive Association of Applied Arts (RaKÜ). Its membership including practicing architects who had no professional education. One of them, Richard Wunderlich, was Estonia’s most prominent designer of luxury furniture, chairman of RaKÜ, the school’s director and one of its first teachers. The RaKÜ members also included a dozen outstanding architects, including Edgar-Johan Kuusik, who became the head of the department after World War II. The studies, which had been interrupted by the war and ensuing political changes, were resumed in 1944 in a reorganised school of higher education with a new name – Tallinn State Applied Art Institute of the Estonian S.S.R. The first interior architects with higher educations graduated in 1949. The department was closed in 1955. More changes occurred – the State Art Institute of the Estonian S.S.R. (ERKI) was created by merging the institutes for art education, and the speciality was consolidated in a department with the new name of Spatial Design. In 1959, students were again admitted and a younger generation of interior architects filled the faculty positions. Bruno Tomberg, Väino Tamm, Leila Pärtelpoeg and Vello Asi were engaged in the teaching. The studies were organised on the basis of a new curriculum, and an up-to-date study profile was developed. The studies focused on a form idiom influenced by Nordic Modernism, which emphasised functionality and constructiveness. The so-called Tamm School, which favours clarity and succinctness, has ensured the recognised level of Estonian spatial and furniture design since the 1960s. STUDIES The graduates can work independently as interior architects and furniture designers – their diplomas correspond to the professional standards approved by the Association of Interior Architects. The Academy of Arts is the only accredited school of higher education in Estonia that offers the relevant BA programme. The studies include numerous international workshops, lectures by visiting professors, seminars and the students introduce their work at both local and foreign fairs (in Stockholm for example). Especially close collaboration exists with the Nordic countries. Students can continue their studies at foreign schools of higher education, or, if they wish, in the PhD programme at the Academy of Arts. In accordance with the curriculum, the studies comprise 180 AP, of which half are related to the specialised theoretical and practical subjects. Of the theoretical subjects, the following deserve special mention: the history of architecture and interiors, architectural typology, the parts of buildings, health protection and fire safety, lighting equipment, architectural acoustics, computer studies, art management and much more. THIS PROGRAM IS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH The Master in Interior Design for Commercial Spaces proposes to work from the basis of a theoretical and practical reflection on the design of the commercial space. The aim is to combine theoretical concepts and construction, quotation, and material interpretation, with the understanding that the design practice exists in relation to current society, to the present. Therefore, applying a historical perspective to design, analysing the current situation, and referring to the history of the place will, therefore be important issues to consider. The Master uses Barcelona as its working ground, and so deals with the commercial space associated with a territory where the street is the protagonist. Due to the geographical characteristics of our city, and good weather, much use is made of public spaces. Streets and squares are open spaces that oxygenate the urban fabric; and, within this area of high-density housing, they provide necessary ‘living rooms’ for citizens. Barcelona, unlike American cities, for example, is a “mixed-use” city, a sparsely zoned territory, where domestic life, work, and leisure co-exist. These two characteristics, the use of the public space and the “mixed-use”, makes the ground floor an important place of transition, and a threshold between public and private life. The boundary between the interior and the exterior is a blurred one, where the confines of the street do not end at the buildings, but rather extend into their interior, through its contact with the ground. Over the past few decades Barcelona has been reconstructing its own landscape, limited by the geographical elements that surround it (mountains, rivers, and the sea), carrying out different urban projects which arose from historical needs. In recent years, these transformations have been tied in with major events, and three projects, in particular have changed Barcelona’s urban structure: The Olympic Village developed for the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. The extension of Avinguda Diagonal carried out in 2006 which involved the modification of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, extending Avinguda Diagonal as far as the sea. The creation of 22@ in the Poble Nou district, a new urban structure designed to transform the old area into a focus for new activity, where a balance is sought between its different potential uses. Making use of this richness, the course deals with the concept of the commercial space in relation to the “street”, taking into account the social and political situation to intervene in places that form part of the public debate. Objectives Confronted with the accelerating evolution of consumer markets, we are bombarded with image, identity, ambiance and life-style, which often have little to do with the everyday products they represent: the ‘consumer society’. Through work carried out during the Master, students will address the issue of commercial space not as an abstract construction, but as a commentary on reality. They will develop projects that are highly realistic and form part of the debate on the regeneration and design of the city. The projects will be supported data provided by the City Council’s Department of Architecture. The aim is for students to have closer contact with the professional world and to acquire the necessary tools to tackle the heterogeneity and diversity of programmes and places encompassed within the field of interior design. Following an integrated programme of practical and theoretical sessions, the participants will be assisted from the initial stages of strategy and conceptualization, through the design process to final presentation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the interdisciplinary aspects of the project, opening new ground to the designer, while reinforcing and amplifying previously acquired knowledge. The course is focused predominantly on research, learning a methodology, and project process. The end result is not an objective in itself, but a vehicle for providing the student with the knowledge and tools necessary to handle any type of multidisciplinary project in the future. Participants will have to develop the ability to plan and understand the stages of work process, by alternating both aspects. The course also draws on the students’ diverse backgrounds in order to further enhance the group’s knowledge. Methodology The Master offers an intensive program that provides methodological tools, steering away from the “inspired” search for an image related to an end result. The course will prepare the student in the field of abstraction, to design the space according to its emotional and visual aspects, and to pursue individual ways of thinking. The research avoids “decorated” or “fancy” spaces, in order to reinforce the knowledge of the nature and sensitivity of the place. This methodological and heterogeneous vision will increase the students’ professional skills, opening up their field of work in the design world. Work will be carried out on different scales, from the urban to the human, from overall context to detail, allowing for comprehensive control of the project. The teaching methodology proposes projects that define the place in four ways: 1_ The physical space in which they are carried out. 2_ The “present” in relation to its historical situation. 3_ The social reality and therefore issues that concern citizens. 4_ The matter as an interpretation oflife. Students Profile Students will be required to present a graphic portfolio demonstrating their ability to manipulate shapes, and their mastery of design theory. Moreover, two exercises are required to be sent: 1. The construction of a space through the cutting and folding (without separating pieces) of an A4 sheet of paper: just one photograph should be presented and an adjective that define the space. 2. Construction of a space of light through the strategic perforation of a foam board box 50x50x50cm: just one photograph should be presented and an adjective that define the space. The Programme The international Master’s programme in Innovation and Design has been developed in collaboration with stakeholders outside academia and is aimed to create a clear link to the labour market. You will acquire both theoretical and practical competencies, and learn about innovation management, design processes and communication in complex organisations. The study programme includes qualitative research methods and skills in how to collaborate with partners outside the University in interdisciplinary projects. The programme itself is multidisciplinary, combining disciplines such as engineering, the social sciences and the humanities, as well as perspectives drawn from the arts. The courses help you to develop your capacity for multidisciplinary collaboration, both nationally and internationally. You will also develop your knowledge in an area defined by yourself within the field of innovation and design. Employment and Future Prospects After your degree, you will have a broader understanding of central concepts and theories in innovation and design. You will also acquire the skills needed in innovation processes for service and product development to operate in international projects which span the humanities, the social sciences, engineering, and the health and welfare sector. Eligibility A completed Bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to 180 credits, within the fields of innovation management, information design, product and production development, industrial economics and management, industrial design, engineering design, interaction design, mechanical engineering, or entrepeneurship. Graduates with Bachelor's degree in other fields are required to have at least one year of working experience in the related fields of design or innovation. A TOEFL test result, with a minimum score of 575 with a TWE score of at least 4.5 (PBT) or 90 with a TWE score of at least 20 (iBT) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of at least 6.5 and no band score below 5.5 or equivalent is required. Outcomes Innovation and Design is an international master’s programme functioning as a bridge between undergraduate studies on the one hand and, on the other hand, research studies in innovation and design within the Mälardalen University third-cycle study area Innovation and Product Realization. The aim of the programme is for students to develop more in-depth knowledge of innovation and design and to thus prepare themselves for qualified leadership work in the private and public sectors as well as become eligible for third-cycle (postgraduate) studies. The programme is based on the first-cycle subjects information design, innovation technology as well as product and process development. Knowledge and Understanding On completion of the degree programme the student shall: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of innovation and design, including broad knowledge within the area as well as substantially deeper knowledge within certain parts of the field, and also a deeper insight into current research and development work, and demonstrate in-depth methodological knowledge of innovation and design. Ability to Evaluate and Assess On completion of the degree programme the student shall: demonstrate the ability, in Innovation and Design, to make assessments with regard to relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects, and also demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work, demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and the responsibility of human beings for how this is used, and also demonstrate the ability to identify his/her need of further knowledge and to take responsibility for his/her own knowledge development. Contents The Master’s Programme in Innovation and Design is an interdisciplinary education based on the three first-cycle subjects information design, innovation technology as well as product and process development. In the courses included in the programme, students will work with innovation and design from different perspectives regarding technology, the social sciences, the humanities and the arts, which are brought together to promote opportunities for innovative processes. In the programme, the focus will be on innovation and design processes in interdisciplinary projects and in cooperation with private companies or the public sector. In the first year, students acquire more in-depth knowledge within the main field of study, innovation and design, by defining and identifying challenges. Students are expected to be able to position themselves in the subject area and master the processes and models applied in the main field of study, for example regarding the planning, management and realization of projects, including risk management, as well as techniques for innovation and design processes. In addition, students will learn to apply research methods, mostly qualitative ones, that are of relevance in the main field of study. Students are expected to be able to motivate and problematize the choice of theories and methods for the collection and analysis of data. In the second year, there will be an opportunity to pursue one’s studies abroad. Students wishing to do so – or wishing to study elsewhere in Sweden – will plan for this during the first year of the programme. Those who wish to continue studying at Mälardalen University will be offered elective courses corresponding to a total of 30 credits. These will make it possible for students to acquire, within their degree, a more pronounced knowledge profile within innovation and design.
