The Master of Design in Social Innovation applies the lens of design thinking to address some of society’s most intractable social, environmental and economic challenges. [+]

The Master of Design in Social Innovation applies the lens of design thinking to address some of society’s most intractable social, environmental and economic challenges. Its focus is on the organisational models, methods and approaches needed to shape positive social change, sustainable growth and new business models. In the face of the promise of untold growth we are now confronted by a harsh reality: that in the second decade of the 21st century the traditional model of ‘business as usual’ is no longer viable. In applying a range of approaches to designing and prototyping social ventures and models of organisation, the MDes in Social Innovation will equip you with a practice-based approach to embedding innovation in the area of sustainability, community resilience, corporate social responsibility, venture philanthropy and organisational agility. Working with a cross- disciplinary team of professionals, the course will allow you to learn about radical ideas, evolve these ideas and test them in a ‘lived’ organisational environment. The MDes Social Innovation will demonstrate that many of the most successful designs, innovations and innovators have learned to operate across the boundaries between disciplines, sectors, organisations and traditional services. At its heart lie three design principles: an holistic approach - the need to approach innovation from a ‘holistic’ point of view, drawing on its potential impact in terms of people, technology, the environment, psychological and emotional meaning and long-term sustainability a core intent - the potential to develop a ‘core intent’ and value proposition to organisational models to stimulate commercial and brand value through interaction, social value, collaboration and ideas generation participatory and inclusive - the importance of developing social and environmental solutions ‘with’ and ‘by’ key stakeholders, customers/markets etc. and not simply ‘to’ and ‘for’ people. The course will develop your ideas and skills in people-centred and organisational leadership as a way of transforming the way that public, private and not-for-profit services are shaped using design thinking methodologies. Entry requirements Home/EU First or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent non-UK qualifications) in a relevant subject, or an equivalent professional qualification in a related subject area. Encompassing courses in design thinking and business management, the Master of Professional Studies in Design Management (M.P.S.) degree at the Shintaro Akatsu School of Design (SASD) prepares design managers to lead creative teams in a variety of design-based industries. The outstanding faculty – both resident and visiting – help develop disruptive thinking using design as the fulcrum for increasing customer delight. Design represents a valuable strategic asset – the tools and the processes to problem-solve and innovate. The management of that asset, the ability to understand, optimize, and steer that energy is becoming vital to an organization’s internal and external success. Category-leading companies like Apple, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Bose, and Schick know this to be a marketable truth. The MPS in Design Management program at SASD is a two-year intensive program for design professionals of all disciplines. Courses are specifically tailored to real-world issues facing designers and are taught by leading design management professionals. The team-based assignments focus on practical and actionable problem solving, preparing students to immediately use the information and skills they learn. Design Managers who graduate from SASD leave with the core skills and tools to apply design thinking to solve the most pressing business issues of our time: sustainability, social responsibility, and profitability. About the program Design Management uses right brain processes to solve left brain problems. This is a screen grab of the top results of an online search for “design management.” There are more report-like documents than pretty designs, suggesting the outcome of a Design Management project is a report rather than an object. Design Management incorporates design thinking, service design, and sustainability. It produces and manages information, services, and experiences. DM advocates and promotes design as a key differentiator and driver of organizational success. Rethink expertise. It’s very easy to think that you are the expert on your own product. But that’s a myth: the true experts are your customers. Jamie Wong (Vayable) Design Management incorporates design thinking, service design, and sustainability. Who are design managers? Design managers lead design firms and design teams in creative industries. Design managers are brand managers, creative directors, design directors, heads of design, design strategists, design researchers, and managers and executives responsible for making decisions on how design is used throughout an organization. The importance of accurately perceiving and assessing quality Design managers work with and lead others to develop superior business solutions. To be an effective leader, it is necessary to have two things: a refined and elevated sense of excellence, and a refined and elevated sense of mediocrity (average, unremarkable). The best way to learn relative quality is to compare your work to others’ in your immediate environment, that is, comparing it to your classmates’ work. Our students learn about assessment, responsibility, and comparative, relative quality. By these means, you will be most able to improve the quality of your own thinking. [-]

Master in Photography for Communication

IAAD Istituto D'Arte Applicata e Design
Campus March 2017 Italy Turin

The main purpose of the Master’s Module is to develop a new generation of professionals who are able to imagine, design, build and spread their vision with all the necessary tools to deal with the fluidity of the market. [+]

Despite it’s relatively recent discovery, photography has gone through different evolutions changing itself and the world around it. On one side, it has helped us to better understand the many manifestations of reality. On the other side, photography has unhinged our certainties to reveal a metaphysical inner world. With the advent of digital photography, the photographer’s work- from pioneering alchemy in its infancy, to advanced computing today – has undergone a process of democratization that has broadened the basic skill base and raised the level of expectation at the top. To be an exceptional professional photographer today not only requires having technical expertise at shooting and printing but also a broader awareness of the entire creative and production processes. Familiarity with all technological aspects (shooting, editing, post production, presentation, distribution), the different areas and related parties involved are not enough to meet the market’s needs. Creativity and content design are the difference between the role of a person who merely does the work and of a potential creative director. A holistic approach is therefore essential to establish oneself as a leading professional in the industry. CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES The main purpose of the Master’s Module is to develop a new generation of professionals who are able to imagine, design, build and spread their vision with all the necessary tools to deal with the fluidity of the market. More experienced photographers are hired not only as technical experts, but as real creative directors. In this light, it is clear that a multi-disciplinary approach is the main goal. The ability to understand and control the different aspects of a production. Likewise, the main objective of the course is to develop the creative professional who is able to express their vision while being in line with the needs of the customer, thus resolving the dichotomy between the artist and the technical expert. REQUIREMENTS AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES // Preliminary Module Candidates who are highly motivated, already have an understanding of photographic equipment and their own vision but are keen to increase critical awareness of themselves and knowledge of photographic tools, may access the Module Preliminary. // Master Module In order to access to Master’s Module from Preliminary, all exam in the latter must be passed and 60 ECTS must be achieved in the manner described above. Direct access to the Master’s Module is possible only with the approval of the Co-ordinator of the course based on the evaluation of academic qualifications, professional curriculum and portfolio.
