Master in Product Design

Domus Academy
Campus Full time 12  September 2017 Italy Milan

The Master in Product Design program combines the study of theory with the process of direct experience. Besides honing the “problem solving” skills that every designer needs, you will also develop a “problem defining” approach: the ability to determine the true parameters of each design challenge. [+]

Think. Sketch. Make. A good product began as a need that a designer identified and brought to life in the form of an object or mechanism. It is a reflection of society. It is about potentiality, adaptation, discovery. The Master in Product Design program combines the study of theory with the process of direct experience. Besides honing the “problem solving” skills that every designer needs, you will also develop a “problem defining” approach: the ability to determine the true parameters of each design challenge. As you learn to follow your intuition and promote your aesthetic vision within those parameters, you will cultivate more awareness of the reasons behind your own design choices, and those of others. During your workshop collaborations with eminent professionals from local studios and businesses, you will have the range to experiment with design methodologies as you develop a deeper understanding of product design and its role in our world. Audience The program is designed for candidates who have a first-level degree in design, architecture, engineering, visual arts, or related disciplines. Outcome During this degree program, students will: Complete a self-driven conceptual research project according to professional standards. Create innovative design work based on an understanding of the discipline and the place of their work within that context. Communicate concepts, methods, and design proposals in spoken, visual, and written form. Program The Master in Product Design program is workshop-based, supported by seminars, lectures, tutorials, and fieldwork. Industry professionals, the course leader, and project leaders guide students via individual coaching and project mentorship. The program consists of four main modules, each of which includes a two-week course and six-week workshop. The modules are followed by a two-month internship period and a final portfolio presentation. The modular structure is customizable, allowing flexibility and variety to better serve each student’s needs and goals. Courses Coursework focuses on: Exploring the nature, languages, and values of the contemporary design scene Analyzing new aesthetic and behavioral trends in the marketplace Identifying key factors that make a successful design solution Defining and solving design problems Branding your own work Workshops Guided by industry professionals and faculty project leaders, you will work in cooperation with leading companies on practical projects relating to product design. Some possible workshop topics include the following: Analyze user activity and social behavior to solve product design problems; use narrative design tools, such as storytelling, storyboards, and video. Investigate ways in which a company can ignite innovations in product design and industrial processes by adopting advanced production technologies and utilizing new materials. Develop a proposal that combines design approaches in a new, innovative, and surprising way. Your project might involve an established brand, an emerging company, a company that wishes to reposition its business, or a new venture. As you explore the relationship between people and spatial systems, develop concepts that address design for social/personal spaces, business and retail spaces, or public spaces. Portfolio The final element of the program is the portfolio review. You will present your portfolio of work completed during the year in front of an exam board for evaluation. Internship There is no better way for you to gain experience in your field than actually working in it. The internship is a chance for you to work onsite for a company or design studio in your field of interest—while applying all the strategies you learned in the classroom and in workshops. Alternatively, you can complete an intensive project in collaboration with a company on the Domus Academy campus. Either way, you’ll get an inside perspective on how your industry really works, and you can make important connections that will further your career. The internship lasts two months and comes at the end of your year of studies. 100% of our students participate in the internship, including non-EU students, who may extend their visas for up to one year to complete this portion of their studies. Companies Several prestigious companies and design studios collaborate with the Master in Product Design program, actively participating in courses, workshops, internships, and international competitions organized by the department. Students have the opportunity to work directly with companies like these in their workshop projects and internships. This direct collaboration facilitates mentorship and gives students access to a wide network of professional connections. Companies involved in this program include: 3M, Alpi, Artemide, Bayer MaterialScience, BLM, Brix, Candy, Canon, Confindustria Ceramica, Electrolux, Elica, Fondazione Bracco, Gufram, Hager Group, IKEA, illywords, IMRA Aisin, Industreal, Leroy Merlin, LG, Material ConneXion, Pirelli, Rotaliana, Samsung, Swarovski, Teuco, TOTO, Veneta Cucine, Veuve Clicquot, Wega. Accreditation Upon graduation from Domus Academy, you’ll earn a degree that’s recognized around Europe and the world—an Academic Master’s Degree (60 ECTS credits) accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR)*. You’ll also earn a second valuable qualification: the Domus Academy Master’s Diploma. Our accreditation has helped Domus Academy build relationships with prestigious companies, so you have the chance to gain practical work experience during your course of study. An accredited degree, plus the practical experience you gain through an internship, shows employers that you received a top-quality education and that you bring industry-relevant knowledge and skills to the table when you join their team. Our accreditation also means that the relevant academic credits you earn at Domus Academy will transfer to other institutions if you choose to work toward another master’s or a doctoral-level degree. This will be achieved through the programme’s distinctive trans-discipline approach to learning and an emphasis on industry engagement with Honorary Professor Masterclasses, on-campus networking events, live company project briefs, industry visits and a credit bearing internship. Programme Description Digital is a rapidly growing and evolving sector, and this is clearly evident within the fashion industry whereby traditional models of supply and demand are being challenged and transformed through technology. The British School of Fashion, alongside the British Fashion Council and Innovate UK, identify that these changes translate into a considerable gap in knowledge and skills within both academia and industry. Therefore, the MSc Fashion Digital Strategy has been created specifically to fill this gap. The programme team undertook six months of intensive research and consulted with a variety of industry representatives from fashion, media, retail, academia, technology, investment and government in order to ensure the structure and content of the programme were right for the market. The results of the development research indicated that the nascent nature of the digital fashion sector required a unique approach. Therefore, three key features are evident: Integrated - digital is not an 'add on', we believe that technology can, and should, be a point of differentiation and therefore be embedded holistically at both a strategic and operational level across all business functions Co-creative - due to the emergent nature of the subject area, participants of the programme will co-create new knowledge through the critical evaluation and evolution of traditional academic frameworks as applied to live industry collaborative projects Hybrid - the course will enable its graduates to develop the innovative blend of creative and analytical skills required to facilitate the transformational change involved in the digitisation of fashion businesses.
