A Masters degree is an academic degree awarded to individuals who successfully denote a higher level of expertise. There are two main types of Masters - taught and research.
Chemistry is often referred to as the central science because it seems to unify the other branches of natural science together, including biology, geology, and physics. Many believe the origins of chemistry to be traced back several thousands of years, to the practice of alchemy.
Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. Sweden borders Norway and Finland, and is connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Øresund. Sweden is a developed post-industrial society with an advanced welfare state. The standard of living and life expectancy rank among the highest in the world.

Master in Chemical Engineering for Energy and the EnvironmentThe Master’s programme in Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment will offer students a comprehensive education and the engineering tools necessary to solve the future challenges of how to best use our energy and finite natural resources. Programme outlineStudents gain advanced competence in chemical engineering and obtain modern tools to analyse various processes, such as the production of biofuels, energy storage or the purification of drinking water – through the whole chain, from raw materials to product. The analyses often include aspects on chemicals, heat, electricity and environment.A large number of elective courses allows students to tailor their education to meet personal and professional goals, and complementary skills like problem-solving and team work are emphasised in many of the courses, as is written and oral communication. The courses are therefore, to a large degree, based on seminars and project assignments as a complement to traditional lectures. The education is closely linked to the research conducted at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering at KTH, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology in particular, and to Swedish industry. The programme also provides an excellent basis for activities in countries outside of Sweden, as most of the teachers have close contacts with foreign universities and companies and there are strong opportunities to study parts of the programme abroad.Degree projectThe thesis topic of the degree project may be chosen from a list of available projects at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering,... This programme gives you ample opportunities to interact with users of synchrotron radiation. These users come from various disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and geology. The Master’s programme will give you hands-on experience from an accelerator laboratory. The programme includes specialised courses in accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation-based science. The Master´s degree project is undertaken at MAX-lab, the national electron accelerator laboratory, where you will work closely with a research group. The remaining courses may be chosen from within the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering. This means that you are partly able to design your Master´s degree.... [-]
The programme provides you with a broad and fundamental knowledge in the field of physical chemistry, with an emphasis on the fields of surface and colloid chemistry, nanochemistry, and soft condensed matter. [+]
The purpose of the programme is to give you a broad and fundamental knowledge in the field of physical chemistry, with an emphasis on the fields of surface and colloid chemistry, nanochemistry, and soft condensed matter. Students develop advanced laboratory skills, profound theoretical comprehension of fundamental mechanisms and good understanding of practical applications. Special emphasis is given to an unbroken line of understanding, from quantum mechanical description of atoms and molecules to complex supramolecular structures, as well as their industrial and biological applications.
All courses during the first year are compulsory, and provide you with a suitable base for future studies in these or related subjects, including a course in mathematical methods. In the second year you can to a large extent influence and plan your studies, with several different possibilities. It is mandatory to complete a Master´s degree project, corresponding to at least 30 ECTS credits.... [-]

Master's Programme in Environmental Chemistry
Umeå University offers a master in Environmental Chemistry. The training covers most environmental chemical topics and provides a deeper understanding of organic and inorganic environmental pollutants occurrence, origin and processes in biota, soil, air and water, such as transport, distribution, transformation and availability. The training primarily focuses on advanced methodologies for chemical analysis and modeling of environmental chemical and biogeochemical processes.
TeachingThe master program in Environmental Chemistry provides the compulsory courses "Environmental Chemistry" and "Measurement and Modeling" in which environmental chemical and biogeochemical issues and processes are presented along with methodologies for studying them. Among the elective courses, we recommend in particular toolbox courses where you have the opportunity to study instrumental techniques in detail. The program ends normally with a degree project of research-like nature. The training is given in English and in an international environment.... [-]

Master's Programme in Chemistry
Umeå University offers a two-year Master programme in Chemistry given in English with three profiles:Environmental Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Protein Chemistry.
The chemistry programme aims to provide knowledge and skills for solving and critically assessing chemistry-related problems. You will learn how to compile, analyze, critically review, and present scientific texts and your own data.
The first year include three in-depth courses that cover tools and theories in modern chemistry that bring you to a level required for the following profile courses. The training provided in these courses primarily focuses on advanced instrumental methodologies for chemical analysis, and modelling and interpretation of physico-chemical and biochemical phenomena. These courses also offer intense laboratory training to prepare you well for more advanced courses and work towards your Master´s thesis in the second year. The Master´s project is a research project completed under the guidance of a supervisor, defended in public, and by a written thesis. The programme is open for autumn or spring intake. ... [-]
