Chemistry

Master-level studies involve specialized study in a field of research or an area of professional practice. Earning a master’s degree demonstrates a higher level of mastery of the subject. Earning a master’s degree can take anywhere from a year to three or four years. Before you can graduate, you usually must write and defend a thesis, a long paper that is the culmination of your specialized research.

The definition of the word “chemistry” has evolved over the course of its study and practice. Most agree that the term is a derivative of the word alchemy, which was an ancient practice that combined both mysticism and medicine. One who practiced alchemy was known as an alchemist.

Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. Sweden borders Norway and Finland, and is connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Øresund. Sweden is a developed post-industrial society with an advanced welfare state. The standard of living and life expectancy rank among the highest in the world.

Top Masters in Chemistry in Sweden. Master of Chemistry in Environmental Forensics offers an exciting education using active learning and providing practical experience in close cooperation with the industry and environmental researchers. Environmental forensics is the systematic and scientific evaluation using various disciplines for the purpose of developing defensible scientific and legal conclusions regarding the source, age and history of chemical pollutants released into the environment. You, together with industry and leading researchers, have the opportunity to develop the knowledge needed for you to contribute to a future resilient society. The education offers insight in several disciplines including analytical and environmental analysis in order to characterize the source and amount of chemical pollutants in the environment as well as describing their history. In order to facilitate a broad understanding of the specialities involved in Environmental Forensics, the curriculum will include a wide-range of multidisciplinary expertise within natural sciences such as environmental science, isotope chemistry, environmental sampling, advanced statistics, and transportation modelling. To ensure that the students gain practical field experience, real-life cases are provided in collaboration with the industry. The education use problem-based learning (PBL) to encourage active learning and to develop problem solving abilities. These skills will be used to identify sources and history of environmental pollution. The program is a two-year programme but can be finished after one year resulting in a 60 credit Master of Science degree in Chemistry. Year one deals with distribution of environmental pollutions, environmental toxicology, forensic analytical methods and environmental agreements. Year two... [-]

The Master's Programme in Toxicology gives students an in-depth knowledge of the broad and interdisciplinary toxicological field. The programme prepares students for either a research or professional career and provides a solid platform for doctoral studies in toxicology or work in risk/safety assessment-related areas in the public sector or industry. Programme presentation The Master's Programme in Toxicology was one of the first toxicology programmes in the world. The programme is unique in its two-year cohesive focus on toxicology and human health. The programme utilises its close connection to high-quality research and risk assessment work at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) - the main centre for education and training in toxicology and health risk assessment in Sweden, and collaborates with pharmaceutical and chemical industries, national authorities (for example the Swedish Chemicals Agency and the Swedish National Food Administration), Swetox and the Swedish Poison Information Centre, as well as with scientists at other departments both within and outside KI. The programme includes principles in toxicology, toxicokinetics, target organ toxicity, biochemical and molecular toxicological methods, mechanisms of toxicity and mode of action, toxicity testing, laboratory animal science, alternative methods to animal testing, histopathology, statistics, epidemiology, and health risk assessment. This first part of the programme provides students with a general, advanced toxicological grounding, upon which they then base a personal line of inquiry to probe more deeply into experimental research or risk/safety assessment by taking elective and/or project courses. Master in Chemical Engineering for Energy and the EnvironmentThe Master’s programme in Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment will offer students a comprehensive education and the engineering tools necessary to solve the future challenges of how to best use our energy and finite natural resources. Programme outlineStudents gain advanced competence in chemical engineering and obtain modern tools to analyse various processes, such as the production of biofuels, energy storage or the purification of drinking water – through the whole chain, from raw materials to product. The analyses often include aspects on chemicals, heat, electricity and environment.A large number of elective courses allows students to tailor their education to meet personal and professional goals, and complementary skills like problem-solving and team work are emphasised in many of the courses, as is written and oral communication. The courses are therefore, to a large degree, based on seminars and project assignments as a complement to traditional lectures. The education is closely linked to the research conducted at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering at KTH, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology in particular, and to Swedish industry. The programme also provides an excellent basis for activities in countries outside of Sweden, as most of the teachers have close contacts with foreign universities and companies and there are strong opportunities to study parts of the programme abroad.Degree projectThe thesis topic of the degree project may be chosen from a list of available projects at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering,... Master's Programme in Ecotoxicology

University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Science
Campus Full time Part time September 2017 Sweden Gothenburg + 1 more

Ecotoxicology is concerned with the environmental impact of these substances. It aims at characterizing, understanding and finally predicting the effects of toxic chemicals on plant and animal populations, ecological communities and whole ecosystems. [+]

Roughly 70 new chemicals are described every hour, and modern society uses more than 100 000 of those for different purposes, for example as pesticides, pharmaceuticals or laundry agents. They are embedded in a broad range of products for industry and consumers. All of these chemicals are being potentially released into the environment at some stage of their life cycle. Ecotoxicology is concerned with the environmental impact of these substances. It aims at characterizing, understanding and finally predicting the effects of toxic chemicals on plant and animal populations, ecological communities and whole ecosystems. As such, Ecotoxicology is the scientific basis for environmental frameworks such as for example the REACH regulation, the Water Framework Directive or the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. As an interdisciplinary science Ecotoxicology has strong connections to Biology, Ecology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, Statistics and Social Sciences. Therefore the Ecotoxicology Programme is run as a collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The programme first provides an overview of Ecotoxicology as a scientific discipline and then you will apply this knowledge in laboratory courses and finally in individual master projects. We will put equal emphasis on theory and practice. The aim is to obtain skills that are necessary for identifying ecotoxicological problems, recognizing essential knowledge gaps and developing appropriate problem-solving strategies. [-]
