The Master’s programme in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology aims to provide a deep understanding of how to design and operate state-of-the-art life science based processes, with respect to product quality, finance and a sustainable society. The goal is to use cells and enzymes to produce commodities such as fine and bulk chemicals, pharmaceuticals or their building blocks, food, paper & pulp, energy, polymeric materials and clean water. The student will be given a comprehensive education in this vital and varied field, enabling them to prepare for careers in Sweden or internationally. Programme outline The two-year programme consists of core mandatory courses in biotechnology followed by elective courses, which include chemistry, environmental analysis and other technological subjects chosen by the student. The student is therefore able to tailor their education allowing for a unique profile to each degree, for instance “Industrial-Process Design” or “Environmental-Systems Analysis.” The courses are then followed by a degree project. Skills such as problem solving and project work, as well as oral and written presentation, are emphasised in several courses. Plant biotechnology is becoming increasingly important as a tool to solve some of the global problems related to feed, fuel and ecosystem management in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The Master of Science Programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology offers students a specialized competence and skills to recognize, understand and find solutions to these challenges. The programme is based upon a set of coordinated courses which together amount to 80 credits (120 ECTS credits) spread over two years. Up-to-date knowledge is provided about plant cell and molecular biology as well as plant growth and development. This is applied in the fields of plant breeding, biotechnology and functional genomics.
